Re: Why don't the ancient writers date their writings?

Ab urbe condita (related to Anno Urbis Conditae: AUC or a.u.c. or a.u.)[1] is a Latin phrase meaning "from the founding of the City (Rome)",[2] traditionally dated to 753 BC. AUC is a year-numbering system used by some ancient Roman historians to identify particular Roman years. I was won...

Re: Hadrian and the Christians

I wonder, tho. In a way, could it equally be said that the church made little progress during these stable times? ... Eusebius himself dated the years from Abraham, the earliest figure that he believed he could assign a date to; but as we all know it was Dionysius Exiguus two centuries later whose AD and BC stuck. (snip) This is why we have the "foe" feature (ignore list), if you want to take advanta...

Re: new nonsense from Joe Atwill

I was going to say something negative; but then I thought of Von Daniken. He was a crank too; but many of the kids who read him open-mouthed probably went on to learn real history and astronomy. So his nonsense helped propagate interest in scholarship and science. Indeed I still have a kindly feelin...

Re: Ehrman's latest book: Forgery and Counterforgery

Thanks for the encouragement, Avi. It's hard going. Been to the library today to look at some of E.'s sources. There will be more sections of the review. I shall try to keep it positive and constructive. Great big overstuffed pudding of a book, tho. Thanks for your review thus far; it's always good...

Re: Hadrian and the Christians

I think there is cross-purposes here. I think the reference intended here is to the expulsion of ALL Jews from JERUSALEM (not from Judea)? This was Hadrian's novelty (and the building of Aelia).

Re: Why don't the ancient writers date their writings?

I find it unsettling that early christian/Jewish writers don't put dates on their letters. In fact to me when people like Josephus and other so called historians don't put dates on their documents; it makes me think that their "documenting history" is quite absurd. Ancient letter writers ...
