Re: How Could Symeon be James the Just's Successor on the Episcopal Throne of Jerusalem if He was Crucified Under Trajan

I'm a little lost. What's the specific conundrum? If Symeon died under Trajan, and John in the ninth or tenth year of Trajan, why not just assume a death early in Trajan's reign for Symeon followed by short windows for Judah, Zachariah, Tobiah and Benjamin - e.g. a few months or years each? Wouldn't...

Josephus' astronomical signs

I am hoping someone has a full list of all the times Josephus makes reference to astronomical signs from the 2nd Temple period onward. I only recall these: Antiquities 17.6.4 - a lunar eclipse, c.4BCE Wars of the Jews 6.5.3ff - a star resembling a sword and a comet which stood over the city for an e...

Re: The Folly of 'Jewish Christianity' Theories

I'm in general agreement with John2. It just seems a more natural evolution to go from some form of 2nd Temple Judaic sect -> Jewish Christianity -> Proto-Orthodoxy -> Marcionisms... in a broad sense that is, than to see Jewish Christianity as a later thing...

Re: Why Mark had to be called Mark

Guiseppe said: "If Papias had talked not of elder but had given more info about his presumed preservers, then his words would be more credible." I reckon if Papias had been more specific, you would criticize him for being too specific - "his specificity betrays his real myth-making a...

Re: Why Mark had to be called Mark

so you have the problem of the surprising Silence, in 1 Peter, about the Gospel Jesus of the Gospel of Mark. My hypothesis doesn't suffer about that problem. What "silence"? "Gospel Jesus" is all through 1 Peter. Numerous references are made to Jesus' suffering and abuse, his ha...

Re: Why Mark had to be called Mark

1 Peter 5:13-14 : 13 She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark . 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. So Papias based probably his claim (that Mark was an assistant of Peter) simply on the epistle of...
