Re: NT/apocrypha and its knowledge of the Gospels

That's right. There are no apocryphal writings from the first century that mention any details from the earthly life of Jesus, to my knowledge.

There are even post-Gospel writings that ignore Jesus' life where you might expect otherwise.

Re: How the evangelists understood the nature of their gospe

Rakovsky, it's more the case that writings only survive if copies are regularly made, or if a dry climate and good hiding spot fortuitously preserve them, as with the Qumran scrolls and Nag Hammadi library. All the physical manuscripts Hegesippus had on his bookshelf are lost to us, both orthodox an...

Re: 1 Cor 15:3-11 once again

I know thinking is difficult for many at this forum (and in the world in general) but can anyone tell me what the 'thread of logic' is between the 16 chapters of this alleged 'letter' is? I agree completely. It's obvious from even a cursory reading of 1 Corinthians that it is several documents stit...

Re: 1 Cor 15:3-11 once again

"Received" is also missing from Codex Veronensis (4th or 5th century) and Ambrosiaster (4th century). Skimpy evidence, and only in the Latin text, but also very early.

Re: Which is the evidence that Jesus died recently for Paul?

One thing I've been having trouble with is the logic of the parousia. If Christ just recently descended to the cislunar realm, was killed in the flesh (by Romans or spiritual archons, take your pick), and then ascended to heaven to become God's number two, why does he need to come back again? Realiz...

Re: How the evangelists understood the nature of their gospe

What about John before chapter 21 was added? It seems to have been written to use miracle stories to convince people of the truth of the Gospel. Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe ...

Re: The Origins of Christianity

MrMacSon, in my view, Christianity didn't really adopt a "messianic" veneer until the Gospels were written. the Synoptic gospels? Yes. Is there evidence there were Christians in Palestine at the time of the War/s? The anachronism of "Christian" aside, I'm not sure. it depends on...

Re: The Origins of Christianity

MrMacSon, in my view, Christianity didn't really adopt a "messianic" veneer until the Gospels were written. The events of the Jewish war(s) had little impact on Hellenistic Christians outside Palestine.

Re: The Origins of Christianity

I think Paul is seeing Satan lurking behind more mundane earthly obstacles in 1 Thessalonians 2.17-18: 17 But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought), out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you. 18 For we ...

Re: The Origins of Christianity

If there is a problem of reconciling Romans 13 and 1 Corinthians 2:8 then I doubt if it is resolved by putting the crucifixion in the heavenly regions. I'm not sold on a crucifixion in the heavens, but of course that option would resolve the conflict. I suppose you mean it's not the only way to res...
