Re: Can Richard Carrier be trusted to write the truth?

John T wrote:
Galatians 3:1 You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before you eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly exhibited as crucified!
Could you please name the bible where you found this version of the passage?

Re: Can Richard Carrier be trusted to write the truth?

The Akkadian account of Ishtar and Tammuz may well have been familiar at the time of Jesus but it is less useful for mythicist purposes. Okay, thanks for the info. This leaves Tammuz' death and resurrection, But the premiss of death and resurrection as in a person resurrected in the flesh, is it ev...

Re: Can Richard Carrier be trusted to write the truth?

One issue is that this is is the Sumerian account of Inanna and Dumuzi. It is unlikely do have been known to Jews (or anyone else) at the time of Jesus. The Akkadian account of Ishtar and Tammuz may well have been familiar at the time of Jesus but it is less useful for mythicist purposes. Andrew Cr...

Re: Angels, sons of gods, nephilim, dog headed people, centa

Is there a general problem with translation that someone's recent understanding is very unlikely to be like someone from centuries ago? Do translators need to state all their assumptions on the meaning of words? And in anthropology, what precisely do people being studied think souls, gods, demons e...

Re: Witnessing the Divine

I meant why question the obvious metaphor of omens predicting the birth of a savior king. Here is something from the records of Ardashir One day Artabanus invited to his presence the sages and astrologers, who belonged to his court, and put them the following question: "What do you observe rega...

Re: Witnessing the Divine

Firstly it is claimed that the Magi came from Persia. The trip from Persia to Jerusalem according to the Catholic Encyclopedia would have taken 3 to 12 months by camel. Also, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia it would have been a year or more before they reached Jerusalem! Well..Does it not sa...

Re: Witnessing the Divine

Why not start with the obvious. Who and what are the Magi? If the Magi have knowledge not found among the wise men in Judea, who then does the prophecy belong to? I can mention the story of king Astyages. This king had a dream that his magi interpreted as a sign that his grandson would eventually ov...

Re: Strict father v nurturing parent god

A cognitive linguist, George Lakoff , has been arguing for a few decades that human thought is inseparable from the use of metaphor. He has used the notion to develop upon the theory of frames so as to explain the way people are manipulated by politicians. One of the deepest pairs of frames is base...

Re: Would an omnipotent God need to create a hell?

That Judas choice was reason for arrest and execution of the Messiah. That there was no prophecy being fulfilled as renewal of the covenant between man and God. Well? What is it? Should I pretend both are correct at the same time? Knowing what someone will do in the future does not make you culpabl...

Re: Would an omnipotent God need to create a hell?

creating beings that can make bad choices is not the same as causing those choices. Causing the conditions for a choice is not the same as being the cause of bad choices. This is like saying money is bad because people make greedy choices. When, in fact charitable choices only have meaning because ...
