Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.

As Cohen has pointed out, the Hebrew verb פסח originally carried only one meaning, that of protection. At some point this meaning became lost to Jewish exegesis, being replaced with the meaning to pass over ... https://www.academia.edu/9007614/From_p ... influences

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.

There's just something verkackt about everything here. Smells fishy. That's all you can say with any degree of certainty. caveat emptor

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.

And furthermore (I've got to get back to work) I guess you could ask me - "ok so it's 'a Hebrew' instead of 'a passerby. Doesn't that about do it. Leave the passage as it stands.'" Well I guess so but still is it likely that a Hebrew speaker would know a Hebrew Simon from Cyrene who had so...

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.

And I am not sure of the Hebraisms can be brushed aside that easily either. True turning around Mark's terminology for something with a 'Hebrew tinge' can easily be dismissed. But does 'man of Cyrene' lead us back to question 'passerby' and if so how certain can be about anything if Mark is a copy o...

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.

It's nice to have intelligent conversations now at the forum. But you say - A 'passerby' is someone from the outgroup - but demonstrate that to me with the TLG. I just have an issue with what I see as an ambiguous term (not nearly as precise as you make it out to be) and the preciseness of identific...

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.

Does anyone have access to the TLG? Any other examples of paragonta? If the term is common then maybe it doesn't need any explanation. But if it is rare than we have a good argument it makes little sense standing naked in a section like this unexplained.

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.

My third attempt before I go back to doing work. I can believe Matthew and Luke's material is close to authentic. I can't believe Mark's is. If he had said: They compelled Simon of Cyrene a prominent member of the Council, and father of Alexander and Rufus to bear his cross ... I could believe that.

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.

And for me at least the 'switch' from Hebrew to 'passerby' means forget about making sense of the passage. It's corrupt and secondary. That's my position.

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.

Maybe I am not making myself clear enough but as I see it you have in Mark: ambiguous description of Simon 'a passerby' + detailed certain identification of who Simon is. Why can't Mark provide a better explanation of why Simon is in Jerusalem but nevertheless manages to track down this drifter to a...

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.

Really? Compare the introduction of Joseph a little later: ἐλθὼν Ἰωσὴφ ὁ ἀπὸ Ἀριμαθαίας, εὐσχήμων βουλευτής, ὃς καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν προσδεχόμενος τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ, τολμήσας εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς τὸν Πειλᾶτον καὶ ᾐτήσατο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ. Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himsel...
