Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

Do with it what you will, but the answer did match the question. Sigh, yes ok I should of been more careful there and left out Sheol. It's only hell i'm concerned with as regards Paul I would prefer you to address what i'm really saying though not point out a silly mistake of mine! The whole concep...

Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

That bit in Romans isn't hell, it's just the traditional Sheol of Judaism You really have to scratch around in Paul's writings to find he held anything like that concept, and he never names it I see the Nazarene faction as being the original form of Christianity and that Christianity subsequently be...

Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

If you want a concrete example consider 'hell' where does Paul ever mention it as a concept, or name it by any names Sheol, Gehenna, outer darkness, tartaros… you might bring up Thessalonians which is the closest he gets but Paul is hardly shy of threatening people, hell should fit right into his sc...

Re: Did god really condemn mankind? Is god a just god?

which bit about what I said? Maybe you think I think God condemns but I don't think that especially not in the sense meant back in the original post! what i'm saying is that the 'condemning' as an attribute of God is something man has come up with over time but isn't reflective of how it really is t...

Re: what did the Simonians believe?

Thankyou for this, I have read Mead what a great scholar, but that's the point, that was 100 years ago :) Why has no other sources turned up since then with all the tremendous work done to translate and locate manuscripts in monasteries and libraries and so on, plus computer reference searches etc. ...

Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

Given that Epiphanius says the Ebionites emerged sometime after 70 CE from the earlier Nazarene faction of Jewish Christianity (which was okay with Paul), I doubt there was "a kind of merger" between them and Paul in the 80's CE. And given that they are said to have been vegetarians and o...

Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

I suspect the enmity between Paul and the Ebionites ('Judaisers') resulted in a partial reproachment at some point several decades later (80's?), a kind of merger. The Ebionites had a proto-Matthew style gospel that got reworked into Matthew we know. 1 Clement may come from the 90's and so represent...

Re: Did god really condemn mankind? Is god a just god?

How do you know how god condemns? You see a false idea of what god is like. What is the right idea and how can you know anything about the supernatural? I go a lot by the gospel of Thomas to help get into right mood for pondering this stuff, it's influenced me a lot. I also find the Odes of Solomon...

Re: Basilides

Marvin Meyer writes, "What makes the crucifixion laughable [in Second Discourse of Great Seth 81,15-24] is the ignorance of the powers who think they can execute the real, living Jesus. The mention made of Simon in the text is reminiscent of the role of Simon the Cyrene in the New Testament (M...
