Re: Significance of the Gospel of Thomas if the Canonical Gospels are late?

Indeed, Thomas has no explicit context. The business case for copying is a lot more clear if you take the context-less Thomas as source for the canonicals, who explain every little thing or at least put it to some use, usually the old "behave or go to hell" mantra Thomas taking all the abundantly ex...

Re: Absolute Thomasine Priority

Linssen himself recognizes that "God" here is not the god adored by Jesus: (100) They showed Jesus a gold piece and said to him: Caesar's men demand tribute from us. He said to them: What belongs to Caesar, give to Caesar; what belongs to God, give to God; and what is mine, give it to me. ...since ...

Re: Absolute Thomasine Priority

Thomas doesn't ridicule God, he attacks the religious systems and their proponents - and slavish followers. He does, however, name The Rock in logion 9, that offers no depth, and certainly doesn't bring you near heaven - yet it stands for the Jewish monotheism I have my doubts about Thomas adoring ...

Re: Significance of the Gospel of Thomas if the Canonical Gospels are late?

What, in your view, is the meaning of the saying (and I am referring only to the saying about hands, feet, and eyes here) in Thomas? Also, why are plural eyes replacing a single eye, but a singular hand and a singular foot replacing singular examples of each? Same question about Matthew and Mark. W...

Re: Significance of the Gospel of Thomas if the Canonical Gospels are late?

If the canonical ( or even just the synoptic gospels ) were finalised late, in conjunction with 'Marcion's Gospel' as proposed by Jason BeDuhn, Markus Vinzent, and Matthias Klinghardt (and perhaps other scholars w.r.t. Luke), might that mean extra-canonical texts such as the Gospel of Thomas could ...

Re: Why I give up to search for a historical John the Baptist

Hi Giuseppe, if I may correct your interpretation of my point on Johannes the Immerser please. I'm not saying that Johanan, son of Josiah the last good King of Judah, was the person that had come to be known as John the Baptist What I claim is that Thomas created logion 46 as - partly - a cryptic pu...

Re: Absolute Thomasine Priority

Martijn, a question: among the logia of Thomas, what are according to you the logia where the Jewish god is more explicitly attacked ? Thanks in advance for any answer. Hi Giuseppe, at first I thought that Thomas does so in logion 65, accusing God of "not knowing them". But the "he" mentioned there...

Re: Was Jesus a Violent Revolutionary?

Take the IC of Thomas and try to give him shape into Christianity - you'll automatically wind up with the many different compromises that you find throughout the NT Logion 6, 14, 27, 39, 52, 53, 102, 104 And the IC of Thomas was many times more aggressive than current translations pass down, by the ...

Re: Absolute Thomasine Priority

Until now, I have found, in addition to you, other scholars about the invention of John the Baptist: Jean Magne 's reasons: John was the noûs personified Greg Doudna 's reasons: John was Hyrcanus II Maurice Mergui 's reasons: John was John Maccabee Arthur Drews 's reasons: John was the Fish Oannes ...

Re: Absolute Thomasine Priority

The thesis of Linssen is that the prophecy about the fate ( violent death ) of John the Baptist had to be found in the Gospel of Thomas . Hi Giuseppe, thank you for taking an interest in my thesis / theory. With regards to this exact quote right here, I pose that Mark 9:12 refers to text, likely sc...
