Re: From Chreistos to Christos

Can you please give a source for this ? AFAIK there was no copy of Aristotle’s Constitution of the City of Athens discovered at Herculaneum/Pompeii. The surviving copy was found in Egypt. I read the following note as source of Zindler: Edward Maunde Thompson, An Introduction to Greek and Latin Pala...

Re: From Chreistos to Christos

So Frank Zindler: But the greatest surprise is yet to come — one that makes reading unabridged Greek dictionaries worth one’s time. Under the heading chrēsis we have the seemingly unimportant meaning “employment, use made of a thing; in concrete sense, example of a word or use.” Although it is diff...

Re: 60 Scholars On Messianic Expectation At The Turn Of The

It is worth taking the time to read the entire 17th Psalm of Solomon. We find that God will restore a native king over Israel after a foreigner came in (likely Pompey) as punishment for the sins of earlier upstart kings (likely the Hasmoneans). There had been great suffering in Israel but all that ...

Re: When Moses is Read

I have a problem with taking when Moses is read to mean when the 10 commandments are read . Paul seems to mean that although the writings of Moses prophesy concerning Christ, non-Christian Jews don't realise this. I doubt if he regards the 10 commandments as the main place where Moses prophesies abo...

Re: A Conservative Scholar's Discovery -> Marcionite Priorit

A. Paul or at least PseudoPaul knew Lukes gospel, because he cites it openly via a verse as scripture. That must be a reference to 1 Timothy 5:18: "For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his wages ." The last phrase...

Re: The Bodies of God by Sommer

One issue here is whether for P the kabod is the presence of God i.e. does P believe that God is where his kabod is and nowhere else. The alternative (which is similar in some ways to Maimonides' position) is that the kadod represents the presence of God within the created world while God continues...

Re: The Bodies of God by Sommer

Thank you .There is no explicit statement supporting the conclusion. The book informs on the different traditions that make up the Hebrew Bible. Sommer's conclusion , " P never locates divinity in heaven once it had come down to earth" is based on what he found in the text , and that find...

Re: Could some accounts of Basilides be accounts of Josephus

Basilides the early gnostic leader appears to have been active in the time of Hadrian.

This would make him too late to be the Basilides who advised Vespasian.

Re: Carrier on the Arabic Testimonium

I think this argument has to be wrong. IF the Latin and the Syriac both witness to a reading in early Greek manuscripts of the church history of Eusebius “he was believed to be the Christ” then this reading is probably the original reading of Eusebius. Andrew Criddle Aren't Carrier's and Whealey's ...

Re: A Conservative Scholar's Argument for Marcionite Priorit

One problem I have here:

Assuming for the sake of argument that we have evidence that Paul made use of a written Gospel which resembled Luke, how does this provide evidence that this text agreed with Marcion's Gospel rather than with canonical Luke ?
