Re: Is *Ev a source of the Gospel of the Ebionites?

I don't think the Ebionite Matthew was "anti-Jewish" for being anti-sacrifice and largely unobservant. That would be like saying Reform Jews are "anti-Jewish" for being anti-sacrifice and largely unobservant. But I figure a Jewish writing that promoted these things would have ap...

Re: Is *Ev a source of the Gospel of the Ebionites?

But Paul was Jewish, so there is already a precedent for Marcion using Jewish writings. It's baked into Marcionism even if we set aside his gospel (unless Paul wasn't Jewish in Marcionism). So having access to and using a Jewish gospel wouldn't be unusual for Marcion (especially one that was largel...

Re: Is *Ev a source of the Gospel of the Ebionites?

And it makes more sense for Ebionites to have been influenced by Elxaii since they were all Jewish, rather than Ebionites being influenced by Gentile Christianity or by a document that circulated among Gentiles. But that logic cuts both ways as Marcion's gospel is dependent on a Jewish bedrock to s...

Re: Flaw with Marcion priority theory?

 Cheers MrMacSon To give an example of what I am driving at, we can look to Mark and its longer ending. For an unknown length of time Mark circulated with the narrative terminating at the women fleeing the empty tomb, telling no one of the resurrection, implied to include the disciples thems...

Re: Flaw with Marcion priority theory?

A problem I see with these reconstructed timelines and priority lists is they are thinking too linearly; too two dimensionally. That is not to dismiss them off hand or say that they are not interesting (and who knows? Maybe they are right? Mark really was first and was first century), but it is a re...

Re: Spackling over the Crumbly Bits

It really speaks to modern man's need to control that the past is not allowed to pass away peacefully and with dignity. Such restoration projects do not preserve art, which is ephemeral and fleeting, but instead it perverts it into something that is lesser than the sum of its parts, empties out its ...

Re: Gospel priority

Hi Guys, as you may know I've recently joined the forum. I'm a bit confused what the general consensus view is on gospel priority. I think a vocal minority is in the Marcion priority camp. I say vocal minority because there are over 1500 registered members to this forum however there is a contingen...

Re: Basic reason why the name of Pilate was absent in the Earliest Passion Story extrapolated from Mark

@Giuseppe I was just thinking about this today. If Pilate and Barabbas was symbolic criticisms of a certain belief of Christ, could not this also apply to Herod also? I was thinking about his campaign to kill the infants would be a Marcionite idea of YHWH and the firstborn of Egypt. Just a thought....

Re: Bruno Bauer realized that the rivalry between Jesus and John the Baptist is inconsistent with the Markan priority

A few years ago I did a write up on Gospel of Peter. It is probably the best thing I ever contributed to this forum. Anyway, one feature I noted was the increasing importance of John the Baptist by way of Elijah references. Basically the more important John the Baptist was the more the likelyhood he...

Re: Earlier dating of Revelation

I recommend checking out Xoroaster's old series on Revelation. Xoroaster really is the one who woke me out of my dogmatic slumber. His methodology was just too creative and intuitive not to adopt for myself. I will say I don't agree with everything he said, especially where Rev 11, 12, and 13 are in...
