Re: re; re: reeeeeeee

But I will say: 5. The fact that the Ignatian Epistle to the Romans mentions Paul and Peter - as Apostles - is not evidence for the 'historicity' of Jesus. Who cares whether it's evidence for historicity or not. It's all fan fiction anyway. You appeared to care whether the Ignatian Letters were evi...

Re: references to Paul and Peter in the Ignatian Epistle to the Romans

The Syriac version refers to Paul and Peter ... Yes, it does. Jack Bull notes: "... In IgnRom 4 [the author, 'Ignatius'] admits he is not on the same level as the apostles, Peter and Paul, but there is still a recognition of his authority and his right to be able to instruct and command the fa...

Re: The Recensions of the Letters attributed to Ignatius

3. The short recessions. There are three manuscripts, written in Syriac. They are also called Curetonian epistles, named after William Cureton who published them in the 19th C. "The seven epistles in the ‘middle’ recension that are widely accepted as genuine ( IgnPol, IgnEph, IgnRom, IgnMag, I...

Re: Do any Church Fathers state or imply that Jesus spoke Aramaic during his ministry (ie in gospel)?

my fault for trusting Wikipedia Wikipedia is often a good place to start on these matters, though I went down a rabbit hole on the letter I mentioned and still have more to read about it before a proper reply (apparently there is considerable controversy about it which I hadn’t realized, my fault f...

Re: re; re: reeeeeeee

The Short Recension of Three Letters - discovered and championed by Cureton - the Epistles to Polycarp, to the Ephesians and to the Romans - were almost certainly the first, original letters of Ignatius. They do not include references to Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection , the Eucharist , or to C...

Re: Do any Church Fathers state or imply that Jesus spoke Aramaic during his ministry (ie in gospel)?

If your interpretation is correct, then how relevant is this citation? Also, would it not be appropriate to attempt to form a conclusion? If so, what can be concluded (and what can't) about the “cave of letters” in this respect? Of course, your interpretation is possible but is not necessarily corr...

Re: Do any Church Fathers state or imply that Jesus spoke Aramaic during his ministry (ie in gospel)?

There’s the letter from the “cave of letters” which says “the letter is written in Greek as we have no one who knows Hebrew” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cave_of_Letters . If even the fierce Jewish nationalists of the revolt used Greek scrolls, and at one point had no one present who knew Aramai...

Re: Re:

The shorter and longer recensions of "to the Romans" can be found here: https://www.earlychristianwritings.com/text/ignatius-romans-longer.html I can't distinguish between two (shorter and longer) versions on that page eta: Here are Cureton's versions: https://www.google.com.au/books/edit...

Re: Ian Mills's "external evidence" that Luke preceded Marcion

5.5.1 Basilides of Alexandria Basilides of Alexandria is the earliest, easily datable author who knew and used Luke . 50 Jerome’s Latin translation of Eusebius’ Chronicon reports that Basilides lingered ( commoratur ) in Alexandria until 132 CE. 51 Since the heresiologists agree that he was a prede...
