Re: What did Origen say he read about James’s reputation in Josephus?
@Peter So did Origen say something? If there is a "terse generic description of James's virtue and good name," did Origen suggest that Josephus wrote of it? Because Origen is paraphrasing, it is impossible to say for sure whether or not Origen imputes his "terse generic description of...

What did Origen say he read about James’s reputation in Josephus?
Origen probably did at sometime encounter Book 20 of Josephus's Antiquities . Origen correctly reports that Josephus wrote that God allowed the sack of Jerusalem in retribution for the death of somebody other than Jesus. Origen also correctly remembers Josephus writing something about somebody named...

Re: Bermejo-Rubio and the Titulus Crucis ("King of the Jews")
What's funny is that in the following scene it's exactly the other way around. The narrator explains that Pilate is “answering” the people, but Pilate is obviously asking (rhetorical?) questions. 9 But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you wish that I should release to you the King of the Jews?” .....

Re: Bermejo-Rubio and the Titulus Crucis ("King of the Jews")
I have no claims about the historicity of an episode that appears in what isn't a historical treatise in the first place. A conspicuous theme of gMark is the variety of interpretations that different people (or demons) have of Jesus. Mark's Pilate's signature idea is Jesus as "King of the Jews....

Re: Jesus is not the Christ: A Reading of Mark
I'd consider first a series of "stepping stone" arguments before taking the big leap. Perhaps step 1 is to identify and defang the various prevalent assumptions that might impede acceptance of your hypothesis. (1) We know nothing about Mark. There is nothing on the page that identifies him...

Re: John the Baptist Passage interpolated in Josephus
If it were the case that Origen was especially prone to misremembering where he read things, then the probative value of his report that he read about John's baptism in Josephus would be severely discounted. If Origen misattributed where he read about James, then that strengthens the case for specia...

Re: John the Baptist, redivivus of a 2015 article
1) Josephus wrote about a man, possibly named James, in Ant. 20.200, but he was not identified as the brother of Jesus who was called Christ in the original text. 2) Origen, relying on memory, confused material he had read in Hegesippus about James the Just with what he had read in Josephus and att...

Re: John the Baptist, redivivus of a 2015 article
It is similar. The forgotten detail interpretation is plausible. However, it seems very likely that Origen would have noticed the contradiction with his view of the baptism of John ("for the remission of sins") if and when he read the passage in the 18th book directly. Accordingly, it als...

I don't see any "outer space" connection in your image.
