Re: Fernando Bermejo-Rubio

To try to be clear, centennial observances are mostly a modern thing, aided by our Julian-Gregorian calendar. They may be celebrations, say for a birthday, or times of mourning, such as for the 9/11 attacks. But, ancient or modern, they aren't usually the cause of something new. imo. If so, not a ca...

Re: Fernando Bermejo-Rubio

I am not quibbling about exact days. I am, though, saying that folks back then had several different calendars, such as from the founding of Rome, and the Olympiads, and year X of king Y, or king Z; or Egyptian dynasty; Jewish versions, plural, Qumran Yom Kippur different from Sadducee Yom Kippur; d...

Re: Fernando Bermejo-Rubio

Lester Grabbe showed some dating stuff Josephus got wrong; I don't wish to retype; read if interested. Oliver Cromwell used a calendar much the same as our calendar, which makes it easier to tell 100-year differences. People 2000 or so years ago did not have our calendar, but several different calen...

Re: Fernando Bermejo-Rubio

Interesting to you, ok, but I think it remains true that folks back then mostly didn't know these 100-year markers. For evidence that even Josephus got some of his year counts wrong, e.g.: Josephus and the Reconstruction of the Judean Restoration Lester L. Grabbe Journal of Biblical Literature Vol. ...

Church Fathers who were later and had motive to denigrate Marcionites.

Re: Can We At Least Agree that the Marcionites Did Not Call Jesus "Christ"?

SA, as far as I know, Marcion revered gLuke and Paul, who used "Christ," so he accepted that.
Later came spelling variants, some to the more commonly-known word, as discussed in this forum.

Re: Fernando Bermejo-Rubio

maryhelena, you wrote, above, Thu Feb 29, 2024 2:58 pm, in part "37 b.c is the historical object lesson in antihumanitarian action. 70 years later, around 33 ce, the gospel writers place not only their rememberance but also their reversal of this event." but later Fri Mar 01, 2024 6:47 am ...

Re: Can We At Least Agree that the Marcionites Did Not Call Jesus "Christ"?

To answer the OP title question: no, don't agree.

And of course early Christians used the word "synagogue." Epiphanius reported that Ebionites in his time still did call their places "synagogues."

Re: Fernando Bermejo-Rubio

Well, I just don't see it, maryhelena, your proposed pivot, or long-echo-delayed pivot. Also, the many crucifixions by Alexander Jannaeus were far better known (even imo in a Qumran ms, 4Qpesher Nahum) than the single killing, of whatever, uncertain, type, in 37 bc. Further, most people back then (e...

Re: Fernando Bermejo-Rubio

Why do you think Antigonus--much later(?)--"became the sparkplug for something different"?
