Re: Ghost ships?
All these apparitions were presumed supernatural, as far as I know. But in the United States in 1896-1898, there was a big wave of aerial apparitions that were presumed to be advanced technology rather than some supernatural effects, a wave of sightings of "mysterious airships". It was lik...

Re: Ghost ships?
My reference to Unidentified Sailing Objects was intended to give historical perspective to Unidentified Flying Objects. Mysterious aerial apparitions have been seen for centuries, apparitions like the Fata Morgana, and Ezekiel's famous one. List of reported UFO sightings - Wikipedia notes apparitio...

Re: Ghost ships?
I find it hard to believe that people only started seeing ghost ships in the 18th cy.,. My guess would be that is due to the sheer number of boats in use at that time, and the ease and speed at which stories were saved and passed on.' Possibly, but ghost stories have been around for centuries. Here...

The Far Northern Latitudes
Thence we sailed sadly on till the men were worn out with long and fruitless rowing, for there was no longer any wind to help them. Six days, night and day did we toil, and on the seventh day we reached the rocky stronghold of Lamus- Telepylus, the city of the Laestrygonians, where the shepherd who...

Re: Ghost ships?
So until recent centuries, the largest ships had a sail height of about 12 m and a sail width of about 12 m -- that's about 40 ft each way. That means that a ship would have a 30' angular size, that of the full Moon, over a distance of 1.2 km, and would be barely resolvable at 3' at about 12 km. Now...

Thanx. I checked out Homer's Odyssey, and Odysseus not only survives two shipwrecks, he invents a cover story for himself that involves an additional shipwreck. Another source of Unidentified Sailing Objects: Fata Morgana (mirage) - Wikipedia It is a kind of mirage that can look like castles suspended in the air. The name is from the Italian version of "Morgan le Fay", the name of a sorceress who appears in Arthurian lore. The "le Fay" p...

Re: Rank, Raglan, Freud, a Texas Sharpshooter, and Jesus
I'm pretty sure Carrier could use a drastically reduced criterion for largely the same result. "Son of a god, not a Roman Emperor [national leader?]" might be an easy "hole in two" that results in largely the same list of figures (minus a few) matching said criterion. However, t...

Re: Ghost ships?
So, we are dealing then with mythical ghost shops, and not ancient examples of the SS Marine Sulphur Queen or similar. That ship had sank while leaving behind only a little bit of debris. I suppose that in a Typhoon or Hurricane, the winds could flip the vessel over. ... It doesn't even have to be ...
