Re: Why the Hellenistic era .... Part 2
... what evidence is there for the conquest of Canaan? One city's fall is hardly evidence of a conquest of Canaan as per the Bible. I think it's a piece of solid evidence because the archaeology of Jericho matches the unique description of the city's fall in the Book of Joshua. Titus Kennedy also s...

Re: Why the Hellenistic era for ALL "Old Testament" books should be taken seriously
Other parts of the Hebrew Bible which are IMO probably from the exilic or Persian period seem to know the Pentateuch or some form of proto-Pentateuch Without knowing what works you are referring to I am unable to think this one through. Kings, Deutero-Isaiah, Haggai, Nehemiah would be examples. I'm...

Re: GThomas as reaction to the proto-catholic reception of GMark and GMatthew
Compared to the synoptic gospels, it seems unusual that Matthew is mentioned alongside Simon Peter in GThomas 13, who otherwise only plays a narrative role in the gospels as a tax collector. ... However, this juxtaposition of Simon Peter and Matthew becomes understandable against the background of ...

Re: History of the challenge to apostolic authority (esp Peter)
There is an interesting discussion by a 17th century Protestant in William Cave's Lives of the Apostles He holds that Peter was martyred in Rome but was not the First Pope.

The canon is by definition what the Christian community canonized. Whether they got it 'right' whatever 'right' means in this context is another matter.

Re: New Evidence for Celsus's True Word Being Written 177 - 180 CE
The original citation is from the "Jew of Celsus" in Book 2 Chapter 4:

Re: Why the Hellenistic era for ALL "Old Testament" books should be taken seriously
Hi Andrew. As you note, the this thread is not about Gmirkin's thesis nor about any of the biblical authors' knowledge of Plato. It is exclusively about the more basic question: the view that the biblical literature was the product of the Hellenistic era. May I respond to some minor points and then...

Re: Was the Paul-in-Acts a pagan?
Constantine moved the Serpent_Column to Constantinople not the Pythia herself. What makes you say "not the Pythias"? I assumed that the Delphi Pythias came with it as they were a real money-maker. The Wickedpaedia page is mute on that detail. The Pythia was apparently still active at Delp...

Re: A quote from Greek Philosophy in the Old Testament
In context Moritz Friedlander is advocating a Hellenistic date for the 'Writings' Ketuvim or Hagiography. For Ecclesiastes I am sure he is right and he may be right for other Ketuvim.

Re: Persecution of heretics?
It begs the question of how the orthodox won out. If the heretics were more acceptable to the existing authorities at first, and not persecuted while proto-orthodox were persecuted, how did orthodoxy grow and heresy shrink? One would think that, if nothing else, someone would rather adopt a religio...
