Re: Why the Hellenistic era for ALL "Old Testament" books should be taken seriously

This is a comment on Neil's original post in this thread and the issues it raises about general historical methodology. It may not be a response to Neil's position as developed in later posts. In later posts Neil has referred to arguments that the author of the Pentateuch knew Plato et al. I'm going...

Re: Was the Paul-in-Acts a pagan?

Acts 16 continues with her masters being upset that the woman could no longer sooth-say, so they complained to the authorities and had Paul and Silas arrested. I don't think it leads onto Nero. Also, the woman wasn't a Pythian priestess, just a sooth-sayer. You may be right, but I don't think so: t...

Re: Does Clement Liken the Eucharist to Teachings About the Gospel?

Just wondering if anyone had come across an interpretation where the bread = teachings/interpretation of the gospel. This may be relevant Instructor And entertaining this view, we may regard the proclamation of the Gospel, which is universally diffused, as milk; and as meat, faith, which from instr...

Re: Persecution of heretics?

I haven't done any research on this, but just making a few inferences from things said by Justin and Irenaeus and others. What do we know about the role of persecution in the elimination of "heretics"? There is a passage in First Apology where Justin says basically that the Marcionites ca...

Re: Bermejo-Rubio and the Titulus Crucis ("King of the Jews")

I see that BR is well ready to sacrifice a lot of episodes on the altar of the purely midrashical origin. But what he doesn't sacrifice are, in the order of importance: 3) the titulus crucis google-translation A third relevant aspect is related to the titulus crucis, the tablet that specifies the r...

See Martyrdom of Ignatius In its present form this is a late work of little historical value.

Papias of Hierapolis (60-130): Fragment 5: John (14:2) 1 Corinthians (15:25-28) Fragment 6: 1 John? 1 Peter? Gospel of Hebrews? Fragment 8: Revelation? Note: Fragments 5 is directly quoted from Papias, while fragments 6 and 8 are secondhand testimony that claim Papias used 1 John/1 Peter/Gospel of ...

Re: Jesus is not the Christ: A Reading of Mark

Look at the variant for Mark 1:1 - 2 in Cyril of Jerusalem, Catecheses ad illuminandos 3.6. See if it helps your case. Thanks. What is the variant? https://www.newadvent.org/fathers/310103.htm Baptism is the end of the Old Testament, and beginning of the New. For its author was John, than whom was ...

Re: Jesus is not the Christ: A Reading of Mark

One issue is whether anyone could easily believe
a/Jesus is the Son of Man
b/ Jesus is the Son of God
and also believe
c/ Jesus is not the Christ.
