Is it not actually an ethnic difference? Persian versus Arab interpretations of Islam? And looking at the Ismali view, it is very similar to Catholicism and Protestantism - Sunni relying on a book, Shia on equivalents to Popes! So is the xian split a copy of the muslim one? Very briefly, Hagarism is the idea that for the first couple of hundred years Islam was not fully formed, and its current image was created in Babylon at least a 100 years later, with very strong Judaic scholastic influences.
