Re: The Real Bottom Line in the Mythicism Debate
But if Jesus was a person how could Mark have overlooked introducing the background of who this great man who knew the future and took the initiative to engage in lawless acts decades before the actual end? In Purple Rain - the highly stylised semi-autobiographical movie on the rise of the musician...

Hawthorne said: ... While all of this is explainable on mythicist assumptions... This is one of my concerns of the "mythicist assumptions"... Like any good Young Earth Creationist street-preaching theist who can "expain" any piece of old Earth evidence away by appealing to the i...

Re: The Real Bottom Line in the Mythicism Debate
But then you still have to deal with the pre-destruction Pauline letters that speak of a bread eating, crucified and buried founder, born in the Davidic line with surviving brother called James... That the gospels as we have them now were shaped in light of war I have little doubt (Luke especially)....

Re: Mislabelling in Historicist Versus Mythicist Debate
I don't see any problem with the terms. It's specialised language for a specific topic. A "historicist" thinks there was a historical crucified Jewish cult figure behind the gospels (whether that be a minimal view like that of Bultmann, or a highly fleshed out view like that of N.T Wright...

Re: Jesus as a Failed Eschatological Prophet
I agree with mainstream scholarship on the historical Jesus (e.g., E.P. Sanders, Geza Vermes, Bart Ehrman, Dale Allison, Paula Fredriksen, et al.) that Jesus was a failed apocalyptic prophet. Such a hypothesis, if true, would be a simple one that would make sense of a wide range of data I have to a...

Re: Does anyone have On the Historicity of Jesus yet?
Returning to the issue of conspiracy... wouldn't the historicist position be in greater need of a conspiracy? After all, unless one believes that Jesus really did come back to life (or maybe was mistakenly declared dead), then someone had to make up the lie that he did come back and met with his cl...

Re: Does anyone have On the Historicity of Jesus yet?
According to Carrier, the odds Jesus existed are less than 1 in 12,000. Seriously? That is ridiculous!

^If that's the case, I don't think they did a very good job at alignment!!

Re: Does anyone have On the Historicity of Jesus yet?
Now you're being uncharitable, Toejam. I'm not alleging any conspiracy. I am , on the other hand, trying to come up with hypotheses that are based on sources — especially those written long before the Gospels. They describe a heavenly Christ who was crucified in secret (Paul, Ignatius), who acts as...
