Re: After 20 Years Plus of Flogging His Theory How Many Here at the Forum Believe Mountainman?

There is no garbage heap I will not scavenge. Yep THE EPISTLE TO DIOGNETUS, this is a prize find here although i wish i had read it sober the first time, the effects were jarring once i got into it So the pattern is clear enough. This is the 'offshoot gospel' of the 'offshoot revelation' (missing th...

Re: After 20 Years Plus of Flogging His Theory How Many Here at the Forum Believe Mountainman?

here's a gem for you ml, early 2nd century. Does not name Jesus once (like the Shepherd of Hermas and the Odes) Mine are no strange discourses nor perverse questionings, but having been a disciple of Apostles I come forward as a teacher of the Gentiles, ministering worthily to them, as they present ...

Re: After 20 Years Plus of Flogging His Theory How Many Here at the Forum Believe Mountainman?

It's like an ultra-Samaritan (Dosithean?) position one time i thought a Samaritan origin but the Odes use the whole scripture freely a really crazy thought is ultra syncretic, what if Jesus existed and wasn't particularly opposed to Greco-Roman religion. There could be a Christian version whenever ...

the source materials are insanely opaque and don't fit together properly, you'd think after the mountain of surviving texts it would be pretty easy to come up with at least one theory that works, but no. we are obviously missing some major pieces of the puzzle

Re: New book on the Jesus from the remote past

yes, this is the reason i'm focusing on beliefs rather than earthly stories about Jesus! it's easier to plot how the beliefs changed and posit earlier beliefs. in the case of Paul i think there's substantial indication he (or this faction) comes in later with stuff that's new and unwelcome. the ques...

Re: New book on the Jesus from the remote past

One can doubt the Pauline epistles but the history of the 'Pauline gospel' found in the epistles still tells the story Which is, the Pauline gospel message comes along later than whatever came prior - on the basis that Jesus revealed it to them, thus it must be believed All other Christians are 'unb...

Re: After 20 Years Plus of Flogging His Theory How Many Here at the Forum Believe Mountainman?

isn't it more likely Constantine's rise to power was helped by leveraging Christianity? he woke up one day and thought why not, it might just work, so he starts putting out feelers and it starts fucking working, so he goes all in. he must of been amazed how willing Christians were to accomodate the ...

Re: Justin Martyr's 'Dialogue of Trypho' as Rhetoric

the acts have a lot of off putting stuff in them i'm interested in the earlier source material, can live without accounts of bed bugs marching out the apostle's sheets, if the author unwittingly preserves the good stuff along with it. diamonds in dogshit from a selfish point of view all i care about...

wait and it downloads without spamware,
Greek + Peshitta + the 2 old syriac side by side
not interlinear, it's way more fun. have to transpose Hebrew alphabet to Estrangela to lookup words
