Is that an insult or a compliment?
It's the highest compliment you can receive here.

Re: The Old Testament - A Hellenistic Book?

We have to build on what we do know now, of course -- and it goes without saying that if and when we learn new things our understanding will change. Well, yes and no. When we build on what we know, we have to (dialectically, as it were) be aware of what we don't know and factor that into the assura...

Re: Plato and the Creation of a Classical Historian

Gmirkin (in typical fashion) found a word in the MT that he says was influenced by Greek. But the word appears in neither the Samaritan Pentateuch or the LXX. In short a fail. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the word does show up in the Samaritan version. Here's the Masoretic: כְּלֵי חָמָס,...

...................................... * Of course, Jerusalem is not actually mentioned by name in the letter, but where else could these big-wigs have been? IIUC the letter reads the high priest Yehohanan and his colleagues the priests in Jerusalem ; and to Ostanes, the kinsman of Anani; and the n...

Re: The Old Testament - A Hellenistic Book?

Thanks for saying that, Neil. I'm not a fan of the slanging match as I think it's so circular - everyone just goes round and round - and eventually very boring. Perhaps it's a question of which corporeal drug you prefer: arguers prefer the adrenaline of the fight, and the others get off on the blast...

Re: The Old Testament - A Hellenistic Book?

I think (in the immediate context of the nonsense discussed in this forum) this is why MOSES'S LAWS didn't have authoritative status in Jewish communities until a much later date. The ten commandments were from God, Moses's laws were from a human being. Most people just followed the ten commandment...

Re: Is exclusive Yahwehism even plausible prior to the Hasmonaeans?

Gmirkin, I believe, would argue for the stronger probability of Genesis 1 being derived from Greek science on the basis of the following details: I think that there is a danger in paraphrasing biblical accounts. It is all too easy to look at them through a particular, in this case Greek lens, then ...

Re: The Old Testament - A Hellenistic Book?

There is also the level of the composition of the Ten Commandments. That's actually probably ground zero. Not in the form that Exodus and Deuteronomy have but in a kind of "short form" known to Philo i.e. "do not lust" rather than what appears in Exodus, Deuteronomy. Can you sen...
