Re: Review of Gundry's Peter False Disciple according to GMa

JW : Gundry's next comparison: Mark 8:27-30 Matthew 16:13-20 Evil Editing Commentary 27 And Jesus went forth, and his disciples, into the villages of Caesarea Philippi: and on the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Who do men say that I am? 28 And they told him, saying, John the Baptist;...

Re: Review of Gundry's Peter False Disciple according to GMa

Of potential interest to this thread, a respectful but demurring review of Gundry's book by Larry Hurtado: https://larryhurtado.wordpress.com/2016/01/06/the-apostle-peter-damned-apostate/ . JW : Thanks Ben: [Hurtado]Moreover, Mark (14:26-31) and Matthew as well (26:30-35) present Peter’s collapse, ...

Re: Arguments From Silence - Criteria For A Good Argument

JW : Dr. Carrier gives his criteria for a good Argument from Silence here: Proving History (page 118): To be valid, the argument from silence must fulfill two conditions: the writer whose silence is invoked in proof of the non-reality of an alleged fact, would certainly have known about it had it b...

Re: Review of Gundry's Peter False Disciple according to GMa

I really enjoy this thread. It's an interesting way to learn some lessons about Matthew. But I don't get what Matthew is doing in a more general sense. I assume that for Mark it's a theological battle for Paul against Peter. But this is clearly not Matthew's thing. Do you have some ideas about it? ...

JW : Gundry's next comparison: Mark 7:17-23 Matthew 15:12-20 Evil Editing Commentary 17 And when he was entered into the house from the multitude, his disciples asked of him the parable. 18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Perceive ye not, that whatsoever from without g...

Re: Whatever happened to Earl Doherty?

Thinking of mythicists of a couple of decades ago - I must be getting old! - I realised that it is a long time since I heard anything of Earl Doherty. I remember his "Jesus Puzzle"; and that seemed to be that. Does anyone read his stuff any more? Whatever happened to him? JW : Thinking of...

Re: What is "a reasohable doubt?" (for Pete and everyone)

From a scientific standpoint, resurrections are impossible... Those of us with hard science degrees would like to point out that real science has no opinion on this question. This is a religious statement not a scientific one. JW : Case in point Peter. The relevant Science here is the Medical Profe...

Resurrections and Apologetics

JW : Peter, I suggest you create an "Apologetics" sub-forum for this type of post. It is not directly related to the Christian Bible. For those interested in Science which I assume is the primary intent of this Forum (at least at the highest level) Metacrock's interest in Theology is a wa...

Re: The Great Christ Comet

The Great Christ Comet by Colin Nicholl was published September last year. It breaks new ground on the star of Bethlehem. It’s going to create one doozy of a stir in the worlds of biblical research and science. Here is one of reviews coming out on Nicholl’s book. “Nicholl breaks important new groun...
