Re: 2600-year-old seal

Thanks for the link Stephen. Ketef_Hinnom In 1979, two tiny silver scrolls, inscribed with portions of the well-known Priestly Blessing from the Book of Numbers and apparently once used as amulets, were found in one of the burial chambers. Apotropaic nature of the amulets Jeremy Smoak has argued tha...

Re: Women of the Wall

As secular Jews, we should respect those who meticulously follow the commandments - this is a window into how are forebears lived and thought - of course, for a convert, not so much. Note that the quote mentions that only after the Haskalah were Jews free to even have a conversation about different...

Re: Women of the Wall

According to Jewish tradition, the Oral Torah was passed down orally in an unbroken chain from generation to generation until its contents were finally committed to writing following the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, when Jewish civilization was faced with an existential threat.[1][cla...

Re: Women of the Wall

I don't understand what your goal is in these posts. Anyone can go to the Kotel and pray. The point of this thread is to lament the treatment of and violence against non-Orthodox Jews praying at the Wall. Sure, "Anyone can go to the Kotel and pray," but why can't non-Orthodox Jews pray th...

Re: Women of the Wall

The foundation of modern Judaism is Rabbinic_Judaism Although there are now profound differences among Jewish denominations of Rabbinic Judaism with respect to the binding force of halakha (Jewish religious law) and the willingness to challenge preceding interpretations, all identify themselves as c...

Re: Women of the Wall

The Rabbis won, and get to say what kind of behavior is appropriate at the Kotel. The reason they won is the same reason they lost to Christianity, they had a better product than the other guys. Guess all Jews dislike Jews for Jesus - https://jewsforjesus.org/ so perhaps we can dispense with your cr...

Re: Women of the Wall

The Rabbinical court has power to implement standards for the Jewish people that supersedes the will of God. This might be outdated in secular matters but certainly it applies to defining appropriate behavior at the Kotel. According to who It's called Rabbinic_Judaism I've got some differences with...

Re: Women of the Wall

Funny, one doesn't see much news on Catholics allowing women to conduct masses at the Vatican, or having same sex weddings or abortions there. Plus, Catholics don't even completely believe their bullshit in contrast to the Haredi. Majority Rules: The obligation to follow the majority opinion - https...

Re: Question regarding the Hebrew in Exodus 15

Now let me get this straight: I consider the book of Exodus to be a post-exilic text, written in the 6th century at the earliest and probably still edited in the 4th or 3rd century BC. The text of the Song of the Sea itself (the bulk of the first half of the chapter) cannot be "ludicrously&quo...

Re: Question regarding the Hebrew in Exodus 15

The existence of Archaic Biblical Hebrew has always seemed dubious to me - more of a political/religious concept than an actual thing. There is a lot of stuff written about it. Archaic Biblical Hebrew EHLL - Alice Mandel https://www.academia.edu/11263741/Archaic_Biblical_Hebrew_EHLL The designation ...
