Re: Who axed Acts 8:37?

It perhaps comes down to whether you accept an early or late (second century) date for the composition of Acts. If acts was composed at the extreme late end of the range, Ireneaus' citation is probably not far removed from the autograph. On the subject of the difficult reading principle, it appears ...

Re: Who axed Acts 8:37?

Does anyone know the history behind why Acts 8:37 is missing (save a footnote) from the ESV, NRSV and most modern translations? Acts 8:37 "And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thous mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." ...KJ...

Re: Who axed Acts 8:37?

However, from the surviving ancient manuscript evidence of the NT, given the number of copies of each document likely to have been in circulation by 400 CE (arbitrarily chosen), and given the length of the major NT documents, does the manuscript record indicate a "free for all" attitude t...

Re: Who axed Acts 8:37?

I don't think we need to invoke Origen in order to understand that changing the text of gospels was done deliberately many times. In the beginning, those texts had nothing holy to them. They were just stories. What about the use of nomina sacra in the earliest surviving manuscripts? Does that not s...

It's My Voice An exploration of "Mark's" chiastic use of: Voice Verse Commentary 1 1:3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight; Prologue. Before The Spirit arrives there is nothing worth writing about (so to speak). The Interna...

Re: Titles of the gospels

The existing superscriptions have the form "The Gospel According to X" or merely "According to X." A leading theory is that the first gospel (Mark) was known simply as the gospel. The others were also known as the gospel in the community that used them. It wasn't until communiti...

Re: Titles of the gospels

If the original titles of the gospels were not the traditional titles, do you believe that they were originally untitled, or that they had other titles which were later excised? If originally untitled, how common was that in antiquity, for literature similar in length to the gospels? Perhaps one wo...

Re: Mark 16 and the silence of the women: The disciples redeemed?

And bluntly, Mt 28:8-15 is reasonably ridiculous narrative. If you support the notion that Mt is dependent upon Mk, these verses are a hatchet job on Mk, whether his gospel originally extended beyond 16:8 or not.
