The Rise and function of the holy man in late antiquity
We have a period bracketed by two holy men - Jesus and Mohammed.
Maybe looking at this period with the question, why the focus on holy men, what purposes did they serve, would lead somewhere.
Remember, both have been proposed as mythological.
A huge amount changed over this period of about seven hundred years. Maybe the invention of the holy man was part of the process of change?
