¿No te acuerdas? —Yo no quiero morir —decía—. No quiero morir aquí. A medio camino, hipó. Yo he visto llorar a alguien por no saber hablar. No sabes por dónde voy a salir. No te pre. Lee.
1942 N THE CEMETERY OF DJELFA
March 8, 1961 [23]
Or you'll remember Pardiñas. Or maybe yes, although I find it difficult. If I'm not mistaken, the last time we met was in 1945, when you left, almost the last, for Algiers. Then you wrote me from Casablanca; The following year, a card from Veracruz. Then nothing. Its has nothing in particular. I'll even tell you it seems natural. How could you suppose that I was still in Djelfa? Well, here I stayed, among other things because there was no reason not to. What had I missed in the rest of the world, not wanting to return to Spain? Family no longer had or the rest did not want to know about me or me about her. Do not think that I did not think to return to Cordoba, but the profession of bricklayer attracted me no more than that of carpenter, and I will even tell you less, and, for all I know, I do not think they would return my teaching position. How many daggers did I do in Djelfa the first few months before I could enter Mustafa's workshop, as we were saying? And put to follow of carpenter well was with him and his children and Cata, the girl. The Arabs have that good: if they accept you, it's all; By mosque or mosque, we were not going to quarrel, not to mention that Mustafa and company Mecca were rather careless. Do not believe that everyone here is practicing Mohammedans. In this they are quite like us (in that and many other things). "Believing in God, remember how Herrera said it is a cowardice: what you have to do is a world where people enjoy themselves as much as possible. Herrera was a curious type. I would like to know what became of him [24]. "They call charity, in Seville, to delay ten minutes the clock that marks the death of the one to be executed," he said as well. It seems that it was true, even written in books. I, who spent them whores before leaving Cordoba, I can only remember that in giving the time they would rather advance it - or we would advance it when it touched us. Do you remember that French, or whatever, that said that Spain was not a gallant country? For the Cata listened to me because he said that he had never met a man more gallant than I. Total because once - the first - I offered to carry the load of wood. And that other madman -Canizares? -who made verses, or who thought to make them: From the desert I come from serving France to serve her not, that she served herself ... People say: Kill him, and people kill themselves. The people say: Work !, and the people work. And they make their box.
Do you remember that Jew who did not want to work on Saturdays? Who was sent to the disciplinary field every two to three? That one also stayed here. He had often changed camp, working "under the whip," he said, "many Saturdays." He started to do it with Mohamed ben Cara, the jeweler. The one who condemned to six years of jail went to Gribouille -or as it was called-, that sergeant who beat with his whip to anyone: to err of name, to answer "present" before or after time, to give money to one that Escaped (without knowing it: it was Barbena who paid the duck, do you remember?). The same one that hung the Malagueño upside down and straddled it, giving it on the soles of the feet. In that of tortures the world does not advance much thing. And it seems a lie with the inventions. But can anything more hurt than tearing one's fingernails? And that is as old as the world. Do not you remember Bernardo Bernal de Barruecos? The three B's as we used to call it. He had been an intervener of the Bank of Spain. Those who did not know him called him the Old Man of the tie, because he never stopped wearing it, even though he had no shirt. You do not remember? Rather tall, very thin (good, thin we all got), we drank milk every morning. How did he get it? "I do not want to die," he said. I do not want to die here. One morning he did not answer. Makrani Ahmed Ben Ali entered the marabou. Don Bernardo was immobile, as if dead. The Moor gave the order to be taken to the warehouse, in the village. Are you getting up? They took him away on a railing. Half way, I guess. They called the sergeant. You will remember what he said: "Leave him in jail until he dies." I have already given the place to another and it is erased from the list ... Hate unites what faith separates. And I already enter in the reason of this letter that I want long purposely because I will not write another one and I have hours ahead until dawn. Simply shout: - Death X !, so that the most enemies join to exterminate it. Would there be no way to invent a hate inside out? A positive hatred? The only union between us Spanish - and now between Arabs and Cabileños - is that of hatred. Never friendship or progress. The future of our war, and of this one, was always - it is - conditioned to the security of intermingling after the victory. Tears without words. Do you remember those who cried because they could not sing? I have seen someone cry for not knowing how to speak. You do not know where I'm going to leave. I do not know. Do not worry. Read. You will see. Do you remember Djelfa? Of the field, of the five poplars, of the only tree in flower that according to that Czech of the Internationals was the whole landscape? Buds of strong green or something like that. I do not remember: the fact that there is almost never here tender green; Overnight, old man. Do you remember the mule of the Ferris wheel with its red bandage over his eyes? And what they asked you when you arrived: Your religion? Do you know how to read? Yes? Well read the regulation. And the rows of eyelids - as Marcel said about those who were fainting from hunger. And the reply of the commander to that old man: If you're going to die for what do you want freedom? The commander did not do anything to him. They seem to have had enough of losing the war. We thought then of freedom, but not of ours. You know: I still think a little more or less the same. There is love - I have three children - but the desire for justice, the desire to end what should not be, has no relation to my wife; They are the bowels of one who shouts: Freedom! We have known many years of misfortune. First was our war, then the war of all (which was the shortest and least important) and now - years ago - this one from here. If I tell you that I do not drink, I would lie. It passes with the misfortune of the fire with the steel: it temples, it hardens. Also war. From 36 to 61 counting. I almost say: the more people who lose, the more they lose. Almost, because it is not true. On the other hand, extreme heat and cold remain the same. And the land. Who changes it? Men are different. In other words, they kill each other, we're done. I write to you in the forest, to see if you remember better leaving your imagination site to take to fly. If I say things as they are, it seems little: you have to look for reference markers and push them with a rope. Words are so poor in the face of feelings that we have to resort to a thousand tricks to find the reflection of reality. Like in the cinema: to superimpose images, to roll backwards, to put screens, to film faster or slower than the truth. If you plant the camera in front of the actors, to the good fortune of the sun and film the entire scene there will be no one to endure it. The good cloth in the ark rots. Fix the windows. Sidi arrives at the Hayachi. Then I follow. More teaches evil than good. The bad guys - besides - nobody teaches them anything. It only teaches - and kills - pain; Happiness deceives, when you want to realize about how it was, already passed. But-truthfully-things are not remembered by good or bad, but by slings. (Like a black stone - of my people - convinced that the flour was not the daughter of the crunch but of itself). We all went colonies and we stopped being. Asia Minor, most illustrious example. America, today; Tomorrow, this. The bazuqueo is the only thing that the man has found to advance. The truth: before the French arrived here there was neither fort nor town hall ... For a country, a defeated army is more dangerous than the victor. That makes? What are you going to do? The bitter shame of defeat turns against him. He will always find guilty civilians to crush. If not to short, in the long run. It is a slow but sure move. The army does not digest being humiliated before civilians. "Revenge" is not revenge. The Spanish generated the 23; The German 18, the 33; The French defeat of 40 looks at what he reserved. Do you remember Gravela? Head of a cone, a short beret, thin hair, toothless, patched jacket, riding boots, the whip always in the hand, the brown coat in the air of authority and two horns like two towers instead of "what must have". He was sentenced to twenty years. At four o'clock he was already here, now he is in Oran, prop of OAS. I would not be surprised to see him appear any day around here, even if he were a corpse, from another concentration camp. During the first four years of this, his civil war, here in Djelfa did not happen much. We paid our fees to the FLN, a few young people left and there were no more. A couple of years ago things changed. The harkas hurried over. The French troops began to "rake", to take people away; Others flowed. You already know the tribes, some took refuge in the shadow of Fort Caffarelli, others disappeared. There were attacks, ambushes, roads and mined roads. He increased the work in the carpentry, by the coffins. And now I will tell you purely and simply what motivates these lines because now you must remember me. Pardiñas man! The one with the split lip. The one who slept in the same marabú as you, in the field of punishment, who had been a schoolmaster with the Republic. You will remember the cemetery too. You see the thin land, the marabou-the real one, with its half sphere planted in the jaharrado cube-on the other side of the stream, the dark mole of the fort, the dusty poblano. Nothing has changed since you worked the "sports field" for the greater glory and business of the commander. Nor the cemetery. The other day there was a meeting. A real pitched, fierce battle. A real battle, like our war: mortars, machine guns. The planes arrived late and with damage, no one was left. There were many dead, more than a hundred fellagas, some twenty Europeans, "I say, not French. The meeting took place near the cemetery, around it rather. Twenty coffins we had to do in less than a cock crows; So they left. There were four facts, which were not bad; A corporal did not fit in one of them and it touched to another, without gallons, of the Legion. The others ... The problem was the natives, the revolutionaries, the fellas. Going to bury them in the Moorish cemetery was a temerity. The hills were beaten, and it was not a matter of having the contours cleaned that night or the next day. You remember the cemetery: on one side the rich with their little angels and their burials of stone. From the other ... We decently align the French soldiers with their numbered boards and their crosses. "And on that corner?" Asked a captain. -Spanish people. You know what, those who died here - in the country - have been doing it for twenty years. Also, if you remember, we put their boards and their names. "They're already rotten." Who remembers that? They are stacked or thrown over the fence. And in the hole I am amassed to these dogs (by the natives). That's what I wanted to tell you. They dug-the Arabs who work here-threw away the few remaining bones of those who died then. I only remember some names; Something will tell you: The Madriles, that eyelash that ended crazy; Julián Castillo, that old man who was all papandujas; Manuel Vázquez, the worst spoken Galician we met; Ramón González, Galician also, of Orense, that hated to Vázquez because it was of Pontevedra; José Murgía, the stinking retaco who stank, who died eaten by bedbugs; Gustavo Catalá, who presumed of ready and it was not but of lameculos; Rogelio Márquez, as big as quiet and silly; Domingo López, the cornered anarchist who spent his time talking badly, if not one or the other; Juan Morales, the sad canary; Enrique Hernández, who presumed to be champion of chess of the Arganzuela; Luis Garrote, who was Miaja's assistant; Sebastián Morales, the chauffeur who tried to escape and who resisted the seven beatings of Gravela; Luis Bueno, the one who tied the sticks more often in the snow, that winter of 42, when our hopes were still green; Bernardo Bueno, the doctor ... When they judged that there would be enough room there they packed the fellas there, something must have remained of ours nevertheless. The captain was right: who remembers them? Who is going to thank them to die here, in the confines of the Saharan Atlas, to defend Spanish freedom? No one, absolutely nobody. Of course, more died in Germany. But I did not see them. These yes. Just as I told you, tell you about it. I could not sleep tonight and I had your address, at least the one you gave me on your Veracruz card. Maybe it comes to you: people change houses less than they are supposed to. As soon as he can, he stays. The truth: they grew worms about twenty years ago. Others last less. The trees have not changed, nor is there any more. The earth continues to rise in the west, making the entrance of the night faster. (The truth was a little different: "Go there," said the NCO. "It's full of bones." "Take them wherever you want to." "Caven and bury these sons of bitches. Men always turn things around). Ah! "Said the letter of the Hare, as we called Pardiñas," I forgot to tell you-or I did not want to, I do not know-that they're going to shoot me tomorrow. What a morning, today, in a little while, because they say my hands smelled of gunpowder. They forget that we were born like this.
