Yes, I was thinking about Herodian, too; but I do not have any observations there yet.

How about references that Paul uses? Does he quote anything that could not be before the 1st century?Ben C. Smith wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2018 4:07 pm Yes, I was thinking about Herodian, too; but I do not have any observations there yet.
These 500 are in a passage (1 Co 15:3-11) which is most likely an interpolation: http://historical-jesus.info/9.htmlWould 500 men be the size of a normal Roman military auxillary unit through the Roman Empire as well, say, through to the late 4th century?
I love it!Bernard Muller wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2018 4:41 pmThese 500 are in a passage (1 Co 15:3-11) which is most likely an interpolation: http://historical-jesus.info/9.htmlWould 500 men be the size of a normal Roman military auxillary unit through the Roman Empire as well, say, through to the late 4th century?
Cordially, Bernard
Not that I know of at the moment, no.Jax wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2018 4:34 pmHow about references that Paul uses? Does he quote anything that could not be before the 1st century?Ben C. But why did the interpolator go with 500 brothers? Where did they get that number? It shows up nowhere else.Bernard Muller wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2018 5:17 pm to Jax,
I think that passage was added up after gLuke & Acts were known (which I dated around 81-93 CE) but not gMatthew (with the two reappearances) & gJohn. That's the best fit for the sequence of reappearances in 1 Co 15:3-8.

I think that you must agree that, even if I am dead wrong, this gives us an opportunity to view the material from a fresh and different angle as my response to Bernard's statement about a possible interpolation in 1 Corinthians 15 illustrates.Ben C.
