1st cent aureus from 4th cent level at Vindolanda

The first gold coin found at Vindolanda, site of a Roman garrison in n. Britain, was minted during the time of Nero. It was found, however, in the 4th-century CE level of the site. In circulation for 300 years!

High value coins stay in use longer than low value coins.
For dating a site one should prefer the dates of the copper coinage.
