marijin van puten :

I've been sitting on this for some time now, but my article on it is finally out.

I've discovered that several early Quranic manuscripts do not merge the jīm with the ḥāʾ/ḫāʾ as we find it in modern Arabic script. Instead, the jīm in final position has a straight shape, while ḥāʾ/ḫāʾ has a curved shape.

This appears to be a direct continuation of the ancestral script of Arabic, the Nabataean Aramaic script which used the gimel to write the Arabic ǧ, and the ḥeṯ to write the Arabic ḥ and ḫ.

so does this mean that one cannot argue that the arabic khalifa was orignally halipha ?

Adam Bursi A further nail in the coffin of the Syriac origin theories

Marijn van Putten It is! But I would hope that that idea was already so thoroughly buried that putting any more nails in would actually be quite difficult.
