I just ran across this statement on the Fars news website from Iran. Just one more indication that there was syncretism between Islam and a pre-existing sect of Ali/Hussein worshipers which became known as Shia Islam under Ismael I of the Safavvid Empire who imported Ali veneration beliefs to Persia in the 16th century. Considering that Hussein the son of Ali did not exist in the Quran (nor did Ali of course) it is rather surprising that Hussein and Ali could reach levels of importance greater than that of Prophet himself!!
