Visions and revelations in Josephus

Post by Giuseppe »

Did Josephus describe the actions of hallucinated people that saw angels and demons in the sublunary realm?

Is it possibile to see a link between the Josephian description of Jesus ben Anania and the prodigia happened in the Temple?

Giuseppe,

Considering that whatever grain was left in storehouses at that stage of the revolt was likely old and in some cases salvaged after attempts had been made to burn the storehouses.

So if the bulk of this was barley, and it subsequently developed Ergot mold, Ergot is known to cause hallucinogenic effects in people who have consumed it.

This kind of mold contamination has been proposed as the cause of the behaviors of folks in Salem Massachusetts that led to the "Salem Witch Trials" a couple centuries ago.

If I understand well, then you are assuming the Josephian description of the prodigia in the temple (that Tacitus talks about, too, basing on Josephus) only under a scenario of Roman siege of Jerusalem (around the 70 CE) ?

1) But did Josephus talk about visions and revelations before that date?

2) why did the echo of these prodigia arrive to ear of Tacitus ? Were these prodigia so different from other cases?
