Drugs and the Eucharist
Re: Drugs and the Eucharist
Gospel of Thomas #13Secret Alias wrote:Clement does reference ritual drug use in the pagan mysteries.
Jesus said to his disciples, "Compare me to something and tell me what I resemble." Simon Peter said to him, "A just angel is what you resemble." Matthew said to him, "An intelligent philosopher is what you resemble." Thomas said to him, "Teacher, my mouth utterly will not let me say what you resemble." Jesus said, "I am not your teacher, for you have drunk and become intoxicated from the bubbling wellspring that I have personally measured out.

The OP is off topic, but the ensuing discussion seems to fit this subforum.Stuart wrote:nothing new.
The Nazi's created methamphetamine to keep their soldiers going in WWII. Doping oneself up, be it alcohol or cocoa plant leaves, or meth, or whatever, to face combat is almost as old as combat itself. The legends of Viking Berzerkers, Celtic Warriors, and even texts on Roman soldiers all mention stimulants or pain dulling concoctions.
Why is this topic in Christian texts anyway?

I'd be interested in what the substance was, or substances were. As anyone who has ever visited one of the websites that are dedicated to psychedelic substances, such as https://www.erowid.org/, there is a LONG list of potential suspects.Another unusual aspect described in the second volume is the fact that scientific analysis has shown that the vast number of vessels that were deposited as cult objects in the pit once contained substances that the ancient population of Yavneh would have used to induce hallucinations.
