Earliest gospel commentary?
Earliest gospel commentary?
What do you think is the earliest chronological (eg. chapter by chapter) patristic commentary on the gospels?
Origen has a commentary on Matthew and on John, but it is not arranged according to the gospel chapters (eg. Matthew 1, Matthew 2, and so on), but rahter by subject (eg. whether the church is the new Israel).
The earliest I found is Augustine's Harmonization.

Does not Origen follow the Matthean order? The fragments at New Advent are:rakovsky wrote:Origen has a commentary on Matthew and on John, but it is not arranged according to the gospel chapters (eg. Matthew 1, Matthew 2, and so on), but rahter by subject (eg. whether the church is the new Israel).
- Book 1, a comment about Matthew and the gospels in general, http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/101601.htm.
- Book 2, a comment about Matthew 5, http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/101602.htm.
- Book 10, comments about Matthew 13-14, http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/101610.htm.
- Book 11, comments about Matthew 14-15, http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/101611.htm.
- Book 12, comments about Matthew 16-17, http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/101612.htm.
Before Origen, Heracleon wrote a commentary on the gospel of John (now lost except for patristic quotations).
Ben.

Thanks! The downside is that I don't think we have Origen's commentary on Matthew 28, which I am most interested in.

Right. I think it ends around Matthew 19 or 20.rakovsky wrote:Thanks! The downside is that I don't think we have Origen's commentary on Matthew 28, which I am most interested in.

Do you just want to know about early gospel commentaries, or more specifically about early commentaries on Matthew 28?

There is a Latin version of Origen on Matthew which goes nearly to the end of Matthew (but not Matthew chapter 28)Ben C. Smith wrote:Right. Augustine's Harmony of the Gospels is the best I found and earliest that covers each part chronologically.Peter Kirby wrote:Do you just want to know about early gospel commentaries, or more specifically about early commentaries on Matthew 28?
