Who laid the blame of "original sin" upon Adam?

Post by lsayre »

Is there any biblical reason that one can point to (particularly meaning here from the perspective of a God issued directive or edict ...) to accuse Adam of "original sin"?

I.E., do we all sin and/or have an inherent sin nature merely because Adam sinned first?

The first "sin" was Cain killing Abel.

In Romans 3:23 Paul states that all have sinned. But did the very God himself lay "original sin" (and through it the idea that all inherit a sin nature at birth) upon Adam? Or did someone else come up with this notion at some point in history? The entire "First Adam/Last Adam" ideology appears to be weighing in the balance here. Was Paul the first? Augustine? Jesus? God? Etc...?

Look ! Everyone is UNIQUE. Sin is an idea of making mistakes when compared to laws or missing the mark in archery.

"Paul states that all have sinned," I say no one has sinned. Take your pick.

If Romans 5:12 got the ball rolling, can the ball be pushed back to before Romans was penned?

Do you believe Romans 5:12? If YES then it is YOUR belief that makes so. If NO then it is not so. Get it? The Bible is about beliefs not facts.

I'm looking at this from a biblical history perspective. Nothing personal here please.

What did the Sadducees and Pharisees believe in regard to original sin? Is it mentioned in the Talmud? Did Philo ever mention it? Did Marcion ever ponder it? Justin? Clement of Alexandria? Origin? Irenaeus? Tertullian? Etc...

Many web search fingers point to Augustine, but if he was the first to come up with it, what was Paul thinking about?

Well who knows if Augustines words were not put on Paul's lips? Think about that.

I don't know if the idea of original sin goes back before Paul, but the OT says that children do not inherit sins from their parents.

Dt. 24:16:
Parents are not to be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin.
Ezk. 18:20:
The one who sins is the one who will die. The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.
You know in spite of all you gained, you still have to stand out in the pouring rain.
