No but atheists can't convince the rabble to behave themselves because atheism can't create binding social covenants. Smart people have always lived in a bubble.

True. This seems to be the same view of Michel Onfray, in his recent Decadence.

But even conceding the role of the religion in binding social covenants etc etc, Onfray remains strongly critical of the religion in general, and of the Christianity in particular.

It is ''the rabble'' to decide which religion has to triumph. And I don't see why ''the smart people'' have to prove ''respect'' or ''empathy'' about what it is decided by the ''not-smart people''.

The smart people need religion to help control the ignorant

Do you think that Christianity has now achieved the right balance? More control or less ?

Christianity is nearly irrelevant in contemporary world culture except among the aged.

So, which religion is "controlling the ignorant"?

Fracturing is resulting from the slow death of religion.

No religion is "controlling the ignorant" in the Christian world, you seem to be saying. Is that what you say?

Provide intellectual distraction from the meaninglessness of existence for the elites, control the masses with superstition. The two functions of religion.

Thank you SA,

Why do you think that so many Christians -- not all of them-- are obsessed with proving that the coming of Christ was prophesised by these people?

Numbers 31
16These women here, on Balaam’s advice, made the Israelites act treacherously against the Lord in the affair of Peor, so that the plague came among the congregation of the Lord. 17Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known a man by sleeping with him. 18But all the young girls who have not known a man by sleeping with him, keep alive for yourselves
