Tertullian's Adversus Marcionem was Derived from Irenaeus's

Post by Secret Alias »

Tertullian later made use, in his Adversus Marcionem, of both Justin and Irenaeus as sources;4 the same material is also to be found in Adversus Judaeos.

Justin and Irenaeus the Sources for Adv Marc 3 and Adv Iud

Post by Secret Alias »

In the second part of the third book Justin is Tert.'s only authority; besides, Irenaeus has been consulted for certain passages (Quispel, op. cit., 56/79), as is also the case in De anima, but this method is altogether different from a continuous consultation of two rather similar works. ... https://books.google.com/books?id=X0miG ... Parenthetically, it is clear that T had a detailed knowledge of" Irenaeus' work, for he also cites or quotes 24 Irenaeus in Adv. Marc. l and often in De an. https://books.google.com/books?id=-UlFA ... 0Q6AEIJzAA

Tert's theory of souls being formed by pieces of the parents souls breaking off and merging shows an jnterest in "science" wholly alien to Justin, so no.

The latter book (Book Three of Adversus Haereses) draws on Justin and Irenaeus for much of its argument.33 https://books.google.com/books?id=aepYp ... us&f=false
