Terullian and Irenaeus text recommendations...

Post by toejam »

I'm looking for some sort of book / series of volumes in English of the writings of Tertullian and Irenaeus that includes a scripture index and perhaps a mini running commentary. Something along the lines of the well known Hendrickson edition of 'The Complete Works of Josephus'. Any recommendations?

The 1857 Latin/Greek edition of Irenaeus by W. Wigan Harvey does not have a continuous English translation, but the Preface is pretty lengthy (about the possible origins of the heresies Irenaeus is attacking, although not very good in my opinion) and there are English comments in the footnotes to the Latin & Greek fragments. The English translation in the Ante-Nicene Fathers series (vol 1), if Alexander Roberts followed his normal practice, should follow Harvey's edition fairly closely wrt books 1 & 2. R. H. Rambaut probably followed Roberts' practice when he translated books 3-5 and the fragments.

Andrew C could probably recommend a good commentary on Tertullian.

However, like most of this stuff, the treatment of the subject matter, whether Irenaeus or Tertullian, can get a little stuffy at times. Be prepared to hold your nose now and then.

Tertullian's writings are edited in volumes 1–2 of the Patrologia Latina, and modern texts exist in the Corpus Christianorum Latinorum. English translations by Sidney Thelwall and Philip Holmes can be found in volumes III and IV of the Ante-Nicene Fathers which are freely available online; more modern translations of some of the works have been made.

For Tertullian you might try looking on Roger Pearse's site http://www.tertullian.org/
