"The memoirs of Him" in Dialogue with Trypho CVI refers to Memoirs of Jesus---not memoirs of Peter .

All references to the Jesus character in the Roberts-Donaldson translation of Dialogue with Trypho CVI begins with a capital" H" for the words He, His and Him .

It is easily noticed that "Him" in the phrase "memoirs of Him" has a capital H.


The Roberts-Donaldson translation of Dialogue with Trypho CVI ---And when it is said that He changed the name of one of the apostles to Peter; and when it is written in the memoirs of Him that this so happened, as well as that He changed the names of other two brothers, the sons of Zebedee, to Boanerges, which means sons of thunder; this was an announcement of the fact that it was He by whom Jacob was called Israel.....

Incidentally, Justin quotes from Memoirs of the APOSTLES not memoirs of an apostle and there is no writing called Memoirs of Peter in any existing Christian writing.

I think you're right about what the pronoun refers to (Jesus). I also think you're right about what the translator intends.

I think it should be mentioned that the original Greek, though, doesn't have capital letters to distinguish pronouns. It's a guide to the translator's intent but not to Justin's.
