The building above the water in Alexandria is built on top of the ruins of the old Church of St Mark which was still visible in Alexandria in the 1950s. The synthronos is further out at sea. The water washed away the complex when Nasser expanded the main highway irrevocably altering the shoreline.

Was any archeological dig ever done, and if so, was a report ever issued? I'm curious after my foray into the views of archeologists about the purported tomb of St. Peter underneath the Vatican basilica.
