You could not have looked at an actual " Marcionite recension".
Joseph D. L. wrote: Wed Dec 27, 2017 9:40 pm Come again? Tertullian preserves most of the Marcionite recension, which removes much of the travel logs and pastoral established church hierarchy. Various compilations have been made, but Jason BeDuhn's is currently the best.
Your response shows that you have not looked at an actual Marcionite recension. Perhaps you looked at writings attributed to Tertullian. It is already known that writings attributed to Tertullian contain bogis information and that whoever wrote "Against Marcion" admitted that his work "Against Marcion" contained mistakes and was manipulated.
Joseph D. L. wrote: Wed Dec 27, 2017 9:40 pm Extremely difficult does not equate to impossible. It is difficult because our information comes from his critics, who were themselves inconsistent in their attacks.

But it is possible to ascertain a Marcionite understanding.

For example, the notion of two gods was not unheard of in Judaism at the time. Yet going by his critics, you would think that Marcion was the first to think of it. Yet Philo, two centuries before Marcion, already held Elohim as the God above YHWH.

The notion of a heavenly Adam (Christ) and earthly Adam in 1 Cor 15, likewise existed for Philo and other rabbinical Jews.

Your responxe is still self contradictory. You already admit his critibs were inconsistent. Also, It is simply false that the writings attributed to Philo are in line with the teachings of Marcion as found in Tertullian's "Against Marcion or any other supposed critic.

Quote mining passages seems to be your MO.

All of these passages are deliberate attempt to besmirch Marcion's theology. Indeed, I dare say that their ideas were not only far from the truth, but did not even come close to the reality of his theology or its history.
You do not refer to the writings of antiquity but imagine your own truth.

It is a fact that the teachings of Marcion is not inline with the writings of Philo or any other Jewish writer in any century.
