Peter and James on various topics.

Post by Ben C. Smith »

Pursuant to another recent thread of mine, I would like to point out that David R. Nienhuis also has a good comparison between Peter and James in his contribution to The Catholic Epistles and Apostolic Tradition:

Peter (1 Peter)
James (James)
1.1: 1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen....1.1: 1 James, a bond-servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes who are dispersed abroad, greetings.
1.6-9: 6 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, 7 that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 8 and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9 obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.1.2-4: 2 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
1.23-25: 23 ...for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and abiding word of God. 24 For "all flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls off, 25 but the word of the Lord abides forever." And this is the word which was preached to you.1.10-11, 18, 21-25: 10 and let the rich man glory in his humiliation, because like flowering grass he will pass away. .... 18 In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we might be, as it were, the first fruits among His creatures. .... 21 Therefore putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. 22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; 24 for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. 25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man shall be blessed in what he does.
2.11-12: 11 Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts, which wage war against the soul. 12 Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may on account of your good works, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation.3.13; 4.1: 3.13 Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his works in the gentleness of wisdom. .... 4:1 What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members?
5.5-9: 5 You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble. 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, 7 casting all your anxiety upon Him, because He cares for you. 8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.4.6-10: 6 But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, "God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble." 7 Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.
4.8: 8 Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.5.19-20: 19 My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth, and one turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death, and will cover a multitude of sins.

Lots of overlap there, and again very frequently in the same overall order.

Most of the Catholic epistles seem to relate to each other and to Paul in quite a few ways:
  • James appears to correct Paul's view of faith and works and connects with 1 Peter as tabulated above.
  • 1 Peter comes across as Pauline in many respects and connects to James as tabulated above.
  • 2 Peter hearkens back to 1 Peter by referring to itself as the second Petrine epistle, tries to save Paul from misinterpretation, and overlaps pretty severely with the epistle of Jude.
  • Jude overlaps pretty severely with 2 Peter and also refers to its author as Jude, the brother of James.
Still investigating how the Johannine epistles fit in.

Ben.

Those overlaps are amazing and make a lot of sense since I view the Letter of James, 1 Peter and Jude as being genuine (and I thus lean towards the idea that Jude pre-dates 2 Peter).
You know in spite of all you gained, you still have to stand out in the pouring rain.
