Possible Examples of Later Authors Reusing Original Treatises by Irenaeus

Post by Secret Alias »

As many of you know, I think that early Christian works originally written by one author were continually recycled. A clear example is the use of a gospel harmony in Adversus Marcionem. What was likely originally written by Justin or one of his circle was reworked as a work centered around Luke by Irenaeus and then was passed on (and passed off) as a work of Tertullian. Another explicit example is Tertullian's Against the Valentinians deriving from the material on the Valentinians in Adversus Haereses. I can't count the number of examples but here's another from 'Cassian the Roman' and his commentary on the Apocalypse of John:
His own 'Book', namely Codex 573, contains a text whose title is ascribed to Irenaeus, although it is currently attributed to Hippolytus ('On the Blessings of Jacob'). https://books.google.com/books?id=Eb_3C ... us&f=false
So Cassian understood that the Blessings of Jacob was written by Irenaeus.
“Finally, from so little sleeping and so much reading, his brain dried up and he went completely out of his mind.”
