Vale Philip R Davies (1945-2018)

We have received the sad news that Professor Emeritus Philip R Davies has passed away. Prof Davies was Professor Emeritus at the Sheffield Institute for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies (SIIBS) as well as a long-standing member of staff in the former Department of Biblical Studies here at the University of Sheffield.

He was the Director of the Centre for the Study of the Dead Sea Scrolls. He was also publisher and editorial director of Sheffield Academic Press. Together with David Clines, he edited the Journal for the Study of the Old Testament and its Supplement Series.

Throughout his career, Prof Davies published numerous books and articles on ancient Israelite history and religion, including:

Professor Davies will be remembered for his ground-breaking scholarship in Biblical Studies.

It's always a shame to lose one of the tiny minority of rational thinkers inside the Bible guild. Hopefully, his students will fill the void.
