There are a number of James in the NT and they don't 'square' with each other.

Hegesippus couldn't mention "Zebedee" given the absence of an oral tradition about James the Pillar as "James the son of Zebedee" (the name "Zebedee" was probably an invention by Mark). There was an oral tradition about only one James the Pillar and the "Gate of Jesus". The fact the Hegesippus talks about a James called "Gate of Jesus" is evidence in my view that he was alluding to the same James the Pillar known in Mark as "son of Zebedee".
We known that James the Pillar was also the "Gate of Jesus" for two reasons:
1) the johannine words "I am the Gate" are addressed against James the Pillar's claim of being himself the "Gate of Jesus"
2) a Gate is made of two Pillars and there was a diffuse symbology of Hercules/Melkart as bearer of these two Pillars that had to sign the
way. The Cyrenaic is also a bearer of the cross/"pillar" and he works ironically as the anti-Peter, to mean that for the Mark's enemies Simon Peter was the true (bearer of the) Pillar: Peter alone as the Pillar pointed the
way to follow Jesus.
