Why Jesus is tempted just in the wilderness

Post by Giuseppe »

Usually, Adam and Eve were tempted by the Serpent in the Garden of Eden.

Jesus is tempted by Satan in the wilderness.

Is there a deliberate opposition between the garden and the wilderness, to remark the distance between Jesus and the Tempter, a distance that was dangerously shortened according to Gnostic interpretation of Genesis (until to make Jesus and the Serpent one and the same being)?

Note that if the 40 days in the wilderness reflect the Exodus experience in the wilderness, then Jesus is tempted by Satan and not more Israel is tempted by YHWH, pace the Gnostics. In other terms, the evil Tempter of Jesus in the wilderness is identified with Satan to correct the Gnostics who preach that the evil Tempter of the Israelites in the wilderness was YHWH himself, the Demiurge.
