How Revelation 11 Was Created

Post by klewis »

I thought, that I would give my explanation of how John wrote chapter 11 on Revelation. Remember this is only a theory that is based upon the idea that the author composed Revelation using Hebrew Poetry (HP), with a twist. Instead of using Hebrew Poetry (HP) within the book of Revelation itself, he used HP in forming parallels from the Hebrew Scriptures. In each draft, John used a different technique in parallel formation yet, it is consistent throughout the method. To see how John composed each draft, a summary is found here (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QLNLgG ... sp=sharing)

The First Draft (Ezekiel-Isiah Draft):

In the first draft John took the text of Ezekiel and Isaiah 6:1 - 29:9, in which to two texts reflect HB int that they both form a simple parallel. He composed one column of wax tablets (or papyrus) from Ezekiel and the parallel content found in Isaiah as the second column. The two texts were organized as a simple parallel. To see an appoximation of the entier draft, please read: https://drive.google.com/file/d/12JZcor ... sp=sharing

Items to note for chapter 11:
Page 43 - Shows how we got the 42 month, 1260 day, and 3 1/2 day parallel.
Page 43 - Shows how we got the child in chapter 12.
Page 43, 45 - Shows how we got the tenth of the city.
Page 52 - Shows where the gift giving came from.

If you scan through the draft you can see where much of the source material came from to form the book of Revelation.

The Second Draft (Zechariah Draft):

The second draft, John took Zechariah 1:1 to 12:10 and arrange the tablets created in the first draft in reverse order of the content found in Zechariah 1:1 - 12:10 (see https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AUjJoC ... sp=sharing. The result of this draft, is why we have the Revelation text derived from Ezekiel in a different order than the text of Ezekiel. This would be considered supporting evidence for the this theory.

If we look at how the content of Zechariah 1:1 - 12:10 is spread throughout Revelation we get this illustration (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WpWPIk ... sp=sharing). For Revelation chapter 11, we can see that Rev 2:1-2 is derived from Zech 2:1-5, Rev 11:4-7 is dereived from Zech 4:11-14, and Rev 11:18-19 is derived from Zech 4:6-10. Also most importantly, we can see how John enhanced the 42 month, 1260 day, 3 1/2 day parallel with Zechariah chapters 2 to 4.

The Third Draft (Deuteronomy-Joshua Draft):

In the third draft, John took the last six chapters of Deuteronomy and the first six chapters of Joshua and injected the content backwards into Revelation (see page 9 in https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Qz41Uq ... sp=sharing). In this draft, John uses the word Lamb when he is referring to Johsua the son of Nun.

For chapter 11 of Revelation we get much of the text found in Rev 11:13-19 (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Qz41Uq ... sp=sharing).
The Deuteronomy-Joshua draft is where we get the seven trumpets wrapped up in the seventh bowl, to symbolize Joshua's destruction of Jericho.

The Fourth Draft (Exodus Draft):
The Exodus draft was a thematic overlay, much like Matthew overlays the life of Moses onto his Gospel. In this draft we get God introducing himself like the burning bush (Who Is, Was, and Is to Come), the servicing the tabernacle in heaven (see page 10 in https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QLNLgG ... 6LFkhdz-3v), and where the New Jerusalem gets its height.

In Revelation chapter 11, John also added Exodus 19:4 into Revelation 11:8 in which he associated Jerusalem as in the Jewish people that killed Jesus as Egyptians. So John assign the term Egypt to Jerusalem. He then moved the Eagle's wing over to 1260 day element of the 42 month, 1260 day, and 3 1/2 day parallel.
You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself (Exod 19:4 ESV). And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.”
11:8 and their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city that symbolically is called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was crucified.
11:9 For three and a half days
12:5 She gave birth to a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne,
12:6 and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which she is to be nourished for 1,260 days.
12:14 But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle so that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time**
11:15 “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and she shall reign forever and ever.” 12:10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come,

The Fifth Draft (Daniel Draft):
The Daniel Draft added the beast into the imagery, and made the mighty angel speak the prophetic message that the impending doom is really soon (see https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Y0D9wG ... sp=sharing).

The Cleanup Stage:

Perhaps, the most interesting part of the story of Revelation 11 is that little attention was made to Revelation 11 during the final clean up phase. Outside of throwing the beast in Rev 11:7, and the escalation of the lightning, thunder, and earthquakes in Rev 11:19. Slight parallel formation with the with Rev 11:15 and 12:10 seen in the table above. Outside of that, I did not find any internal parallel formation of substance. This might explain why it is different than other passages within Revelation.
