Original reading of Acts 12:2

Post by Giuseppe »

Acts 12:1-2:

About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. He killed James the brother of John with the sword,

It seems that the original reading was:

About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. He killed James and John with the sword,

In this way you can resolve the contradiction of a James being famous per se, hence without need of being recognized by specifying who is his brother (the quasi vanishing figure named John son of Zebedee).

Note that in this way we have an identical "baptism of blood" for the two sons of Zebedee.
