There's very little benefit to the writers to all the licensing fees for scholarship, maybe even net negative when including the costs they incur (time and money) accessing the materials that they need. It's a wonder to me that academics don't just publish all their papers online for free (in addition to placement in the status-boosting journals). This has been the norm in other fields, particularly mathematics and machine learning, for a while now.
