39 And some of the scribes answering, said, “Teacher, you have spoken well.”

50 And a certain one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
52 And Jesus said to those having come out against Him, the chief priests, and captains of the temple and elders, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as against a robber?
54 And having seized Him, they led Him away, and led Him into the house of the high priest. And Peter was following afar off.

56 And having returned, they prepared spices and anointing oils. And they rested indeed on the Sabbath according to the commandment.
Chapter 24 The Resurrection
19 And He said to them, “What things?” And they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet, mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,
20 and that our chief priests and rulers delivered Him up to the judgment of death, and crucified Him.
25 And He said to them, “O foolish and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken.
27 And having begun from Moses and from all the prophets, He interpreted to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.
44 And He said unto to them, “These are my words, which I spoke to you being still with you, that all things having been written concerning Me in the Law of Moses and the prophets and the Psalms, it behooves to be fulfilled.”

BOOK OF John
Chapter 1 The Beginning
19 And this is the testimony of John when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem, that they might ask him, “Who are you?”
21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he says, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
23 He was saying, “I am a voice crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’”c as Isaiah the prophet said.
24 And those having been sent were of the Pharisees,
25 and they asked him and said to him, “Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”

45 It is written in the prophets: ‘And they will all be taught of God.’d Everyone having heard from the Father and having learned, comes to Me.
Chapter 7 Jesus Teaches at the Feast
32 The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers, that they might seize Him.
40 Therefore having heard these words, some of the people were saying, “This is truly the prophet.”
45 Therefore the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?”
47 Therefore the Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived?
48 Has any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on Him?
52 They answered and said to him, “Are you not also from Galilee? Search and see that a prophet is not raised out of Galilee.”b
Chapter 8 The Woman Caught in Adultery
3 Now the scribes and the Pharisees bring to Him a woman having been caught in adultery, and having set her in the midst,
13 Therefore the Pharisees said to Him, “You are bearing witness concerning Yourself; Your testimony is not true.”
52 Therefore the Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon. Abraham and the prophets died, and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word, he shall never taste of death, to the age.’
53 Are You greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Whom do You make yourself?”
Chapter 9 Jesus Heals the Man Born Blind
12 And they said to him, “Where is He?” He says, “I do not know.” The Pharisees Investigate the Healing
13 They bring him who once was blind to the Pharisees.
15 Therefore the Pharisees also were asking him again how he had received sight. And he said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”
16 Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from God, for He does not keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How is a sinful man able to do such signs?” And there was division among them.
17 Therefore they say again to the blind man, “What do you say concerning Him, for He opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a prophet.”
40 Some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things, and they said to Him, “Are we also blind?”
Chapter 10 Jesus the Good Shepherd
Chapter 11 The Death of Lazarus
46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
47 Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and were saying, “What are we to do? For this man does many signs.
49 But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest the same year, said to them, “You know nothing at all,
51 Now he did not say this from himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation,
57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command that if anyone should know where He is, he should show it, so that they might seize Him.
Chapter 12 Mary Anoints Jesus
10 But the chief priests took counsel, that they might kill Lazarus also,
19 Therefore the Pharisees said among themselves, “You see that you gain nothing. Behold, the world has gone after Him.” Jesus Predicts His Death

3 Therefore Judas, having procured the cohort and officers from the chief priests and from the Pharisees, comes there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. Now the servant’s name was Malchus.
13 And they led Him away to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest the same year.
15 And Simon Peter and the other disciple were following Jesus. Now since that disciple was known to the high priest, he also entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest.
16 But Peter stood at the door outside. Therefore the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper and brought in Peter.
18 Now the servants and the officers were standing, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold and they were warming themselves. And Peter was also standing with them and warming himself. Jesus Before the High Priest
19 Then the high priest questioned Jesus concerning His disciples and concerning His teaching.
22 Now of His having said these things, one of the officers standing by gave a blow with the palm to Jesus, having said, “Do You answer the high priest this way?”
24 Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. Peter's Second and Third Denials
26 One of the servants of the high priest, being kinsman of him whose ear Peter had cut off, says, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?”
35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your nation and the chief priests delivered You to me. What have You done?”
Chapter 19 The Soldiers Mock Jesus
6 Therefore when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out saying, “Crucify! Crucify!” Pilate says to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him.”
15 So they cried out, “Away with Him, away! Crucify Him!” Pilate says to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king except Caesar.” The Crucifixion
21 Therefore the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that He said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’”

Pharisee / scribe / laywer in all of the NT - Acts through Revelation

One way to look for progression in development of ideas (in order to establishment priority / order) is to follow the evolution of certain concepts

Here is a complete list from Berean Literal (with footnote references left intact), of every verse with the word: prophet, lawyer, scribe, priest, Pharisee or Sadducee

BOOK OF Acts
Chapter 1 Prologue
Chapter 2 The Holy Spirit at Pentecost
16 But this is that having been spoken by the prophet Joel:
30 being therefore a prophet and knowing that God swore to him with an oath to set out of the fruit of his loins upon his throne.
Chapter 3 A Lame Man Walks
18 But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that His Christ should suffer, He has thus fulfilled.
21 whom indeed it behooves heaven to receive until the times of restoration of all things, of which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from the age.
22 For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up to you a prophet like me out from your brothers. You will listen to Him in all things, as many as He might say to you.
23 And it will be that every soul who might not heed that prophet will be utterly destroyed out from the people.’c
24 And also all the prophets from Samuel, and those subsequently, as many as have spoken, also have proclaimed these days.
25 You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your seed all the families of the earth will be blessed.’d
Chapter 4 Peter and John Before the Council
1 And of them speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,
5 And it came to pass on the next day, their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem,
6 and Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of high-priestly descent.
23 Now having been let go, they came to the own and reported how much the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
Chapter 5 Ananias and Sapphira
17 But the high priest, having risen up, and all those with him (being the sect of the Sadducees) were filled with jealousy,
21 And having heard, they entered into the temple at the dawn and were teaching. Now the high priest having come, and those with him, called together the Council, even the whole Senate of the sons of Israel, and sent to the prison house to bring them.
24 Now when both the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were perplexed concerning them, what this might be.
27 And having brought them, they set them in the Council. And the high priest asked them,
34 But a certain man having risen up in the Council, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law honored by all the people, commanded them to put the men outside for a short while.
Chapter 6 The Choosing of the Seven
7 And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem was multiplied exceedingly, and a great multitude of the priests were becoming obedient to the faith. The Arrest of Stephen
12 And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes; and having come upon him, they seized him and brought him to the Council.
Chapter 7 Stephen's Address to the Sanhedrin
1 And the high priest said, “Are these things so?”
37 This is the Moses having said to the sons of Israel, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me out from your brothers.’g
42 But God turned away and delivered them to worship the host of heaven, as it has been written in the book of the prophets: ‘Did you offer slain beasts and sacrifices to Me forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
48 Yet the Most High does not dwell in hand-made houses. As the prophet says:
52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those having foretold about the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you have now become betrayers and murderers,
Chapter 8 Saul Persecutes the Church
28 And he was returning and sitting in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah.
30 And Philip having run up, heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and said, “Do you then understand what you are reading?”
34 And the eunuch answering said to Philip, “I beseech you, concerning whom does the prophet say this? Concerning himself, or concerning some other?”
Chapter 9 The Road to Damascus
1 Meanwhile, Saul still breathing out threats and murder toward the disciples of the Lord, having gone to the high priest,
14 And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all those calling on Your name.”
21 And all those hearing were amazed and were saying, “Is this not the one having ravaged those in Jerusalem calling on this name? And he had come here for this, that he might bring them, having been bound, to the chief priests.”
Chapter 10 Cornelius Sends for Peter
43 To Him all the prophets bear witness that everyone believing in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name.” The Gentiles Receive the Holy Spirit
Chapter 11 Peter's Report at Jerusalem
27 Now in these days, prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.
Chapter 12 James Killed, Peter Imprisoned
Chapter 13 Paul's First Missionary Journey
1 Now there were prophets and teachers in Antioch in the church being there, both Barnabas and Simeon who was called Niger, and Lucius the Cyrenian, and Manaen brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
6 Now having passed through the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a certain magician, a Jewish false prophet whose name was Bar-Jesus,
15 And after the reading of the Law and of the prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, “Men, brothers, if there is any word of exhortation among you toward the people, speak.”
20 during four hundred and fifty years. And after these things, He gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.
27 For those dwelling in Jerusalem and their rulers, not having known Him and the voices of the prophets that are being read on every Sabbath, having condemned Him, they fulfilled them.
40 Take heed therefore, lest that having been said in the prophets might come about:
Chapter 14 Paul and Barnabas at Iconium
13 And the priest of Zeus, being just outside the city, having brought oxen and wreaths to the gates, was desiring with the crowds to sacrifice.
Chapter 15 The Dispute over Circumcision
5 Now certain of those who believed, from the sect of the Pharisees, rose up, saying, “It is necessary to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the Law of Moses.”
15 And the words of the prophets agree with this, as it is written:
32 Both Judas and Silas, also being prophets themselves, exhorted and strengthened the brothers by much talk.

Chapter 22 Paul's Defense to the Crowd
5 as also the high priest and the whole elderhood bears witness to me, from whom also having received letters to the brothers, I was on my way to Damascus to bring also those being there, bound to Jerusalem, in order that they might be punished.
30 And on the next day, desiring to know for certain why he is accused by the Jews, he unbound him and commanded the chief priests and the whole council to assemble. And having brought down Paul, he set him among them. a 2 Or Aramaic
Chapter 23 Paul Before the Sanhedrin
2 Then the high priest Ananias commanded those standing by him to strike his mouth.
4 Now those who stood by said, “Do you insult the high priest of God?”
5 And Paul was saying, “I was not aware, brothers, that he is high priest; for it has been written: ‘You shall not speak evil of the ruler of your people.’a”
6 Then Paul, having known that the one part consists of Sadducees, but the other of Pharisees, began crying out in the Council, “Men, brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee; I am judged concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead.”
7 And of him saying this, a dissension arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the crowd was divided.
8 For indeed Sadducees say there to be no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but Pharisees confess both.
9 Then a great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the party of the Pharisees, having risen up, were contending saying, “We find nothing evil in this man. And what if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”
14 who, having come to the chief priests and the elders, said, “We have bound ourselves with an oath to eat nothing until we should kill Paul.
Chapter 24 Tertullus Prosecutes Paul

12 during which, journeying to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests,
22 Therefore having obtained help from God unto this day, I have stood bearing witness both to small and to great, saying nothing other than what both the prophets and Moses said was about to happen:
27 Do you believe the prophets, King Agrippa? I know that you believe.”

17 Therefore it behooved Him to be made like the brothers in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things relating to God, in order to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
Chapter 3 Jesus Our Apostle and High Priest
1 Therefore, holy brothers, partakers of the heavenly calling, carefully consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession,
Chapter 4 The Sabbath Rest
13 And there is no creature hidden before Him, but all things are uncovered and laid bare to the eyes of Him to whom is our reckoning. Jesus the Great High Priest
14 Therefore having a great high priest having passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, we should hold firmly to our confession.
15 For we do not have a high priest not being able to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one having been tempted in all things by the same way, without sin.
Chapter 5 The Perfect High Priest
1 For every high priest, being taken from among men, is appointed on behalf of men in things relating to God, that he should offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins,
5 So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become a high priest, but the One having said to Him: “You are My Son, today I have begotten You.”a
6 Just as He says also in another place: “You are a priest to the age, according to the order of Melchizedek.”b

Chapter 6 A Call to Maturity
20 where Jesus, the forerunner for us, has entered, having become a high priest to the age, according to the order of Melchizedek. a 1 Or from pointless rituals b 2 Or cleansing rites c 14 Genesis 22:17
Chapter 7 Melchizedek and Abraham
1 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of God Most High, having met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and having blessed him,
3 Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but having been made like the Son of God, he remains a priest unto all time.
5 And indeed, those out from the sons of Levi receiving the priestly office have a commandment to take a tenth from the people, according to the Law, that is, from their brothers, though having come out of the loin of Abraham.
10 For he was still in the loin of his father when Melchizedek met him. A Superior Priesthood
11 Then indeed, if perfection were by the Levitical priesthood (for upon it the people had received the Law) what need was there still for another priest to arise, according to the order of Melchizedek, and not to be named according to the order of Aaron?
12 For of the priesthood being changed, from necessity a change of Law also takes place.
14 For it is evident that our Lord has sprung out of Judah, a tribe as to which Moses spoke nothing concerning priests.
15 And it is yet more abundantly evident if another priest according to the likeness of Melchizedek arises,
17 For it is testified: “You are a priest to the age, according to the order of Melchizedek.”a
20 And inasmuch as it was not apart from an oath, for those ones truly are becoming priests without an oath,
21 He, however, was with an oath through the One saying to Him: “The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind, ‘You are a priest to the age.’”b
23 And indeed those having become priests are many, because of being prevented from continuing by death.
24 But because of His abiding to the age, He holds the permanent priesthood,
26 For such a high priest indeed was fitting for us, holy, innocent, undefiled, having been separated from sinners, and having become higher than the heavens,
27 who has no need every day, as the first high priests, to offer up sacrifices for the own sins, then for those of the people; for He did this once for all, having offered up Himself.
28 For the Law appoints as high priests men having weakness; but the word of the oath, which is after the Law, a Son having been perfected to the age. a 17 Psalm 110:4 b 21 Psalm 110:4 c 25 Or forever
Chapter 8 Christ's Eternal Priesthood
1 Now the point of the things being spoken of is that we have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,
3 For every high priest is appointed in order to offer both gifts and sacrifices; wherefore it was necessary for this One also to have something that He might offer.
4 Then certainly if He were on earth, not even would He be a priest, there being those offering the gifts according to Law,
Chapter 9 The Earthly Tabernacle
6 Now these things having been prepared thus, indeed the priests enter into the first tabernacle regularly, accomplishing the sacred services.
7 But only the high priest enters into the second, once in the year, not without blood, which he offers for himself and the sins of ignorance of the people.
11 But Christ, having appeared as high priest of the good things having come,a by the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made by hands, that is, not of this creation,
25 nor that He should offer Himself repeatedly, just as the high priest enters into the holy places every year with the blood of another.
Chapter 10 Christ's Perfect Sacrifice
11 And indeed every priest stands every day, ministering and offering the same sacrifices repeatedly, which never are able to take away sins.
21 and having a great priest over the house of God,

Re: Pharisee / scribe / laywer etc in all of the NT - summary

Post by mlinssen »

If you ever needed to be convinced that the Synoptics form one part of the NT, and the remainder another - this should take care of that.
Only prophets in "Romans ff.", nothing else. No Pharisees nor Sadducees, no layers no scribes, yet most certainly not one single priest

And Acts is a remarkable symbiotism of both

Luke is the only one to mention lawyers, apart from an occasional incidental entry in the others.
Mark names Sadducees once, yet Matthew has seven occurrences of them, and that's where it begins and ends.
Prophets are "the only thing" in [EDIT: forgot to fix this when I realised that Acts didn't make the cut to the second part of the thread, see viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7718#p119268 Acts Romans] and further, there is nothing of the rest: no scribe, lawyers, Pharisee or Sadducee - and certainly no priests.
Priests figure mostly in copies of every gospel, and it is John who assigns them new parts.
That same John has no lawyers, and only one occurrence of scribes, and if you ever needed proof that the Adulterous Woman was fake, then this is compelling: John doesn't mention scribes nor lawyers.
It is interesting to see how there is no fixed order for scribes and Pharisees / Pharisees and scribes, yet in Matthew's woes there is

So far an initial summary [EDIT: initially I had only highlighted 'priest' in the first post, thereby making myself think that I included them in the search - I didn't. So I now have gone by both posts in this thread, added the relevant verses, and new patterns emerge]

My apologies for screwing this up twice now

You didn't give the data for Acts and it has multiple mentions of priests, Sadducees and Pharisees. What are you getting at?

So that we don't get trapped in some sort of infinite regress, I'll answer your question directly.

What I was initially getting at is that your statement of the facts was inaccurate. You seem to have understood this, because you corrected your statement about Acts and further to be about Romans and further, but some inaccuracies remain. Luke (1) and Acts (5) mention Sadducees, and Hebrews speaks of priests and high priests.

Yes, there is a difference between the Gospels and Acts (i.e., the narrative books of the New Testament) and the rest (i.e., the Pauline Corpus, the Catholic Epistles and Revelation) with regards to the Jewish (or Judean) sects and leadership. We could add rulers and rulers of the synagogue to the list, and for that matter synagogues, which are mentioned only in Revelation (2.9, 3.9) outside of the Gospels and Acts (and James 2.2, though that may well mean "assembly" not specifically a Jewish synagogue). Other than that there are, as you say, only a few occasional and sporadic references, as when Paul says he was, in regard to the law, a Pharisee (Phil. 3.5). The presence of Jewish authorities is occasionally felt even when they are not specifically identified (which Jewish authorities ordered Paul to be given the forty lashes less one five times in 2 Cor 11.24?, and where did this take place?).
So far an initial summary
This would imply that you are getting at something. Also, the fact that you are including prophets ('the only thing", whatever that means) in your survey suggests you have some point to make about them.

Dear Ken. You are making a long story out of a very short one.
I prepared the full thread in one piece but it was over 130k characters, well over the 60k limit, so I cut it up.
I initially had Acts following the Synoptics but with the comments it became too large, so I cut it out - and something must have gone wrong while adding it to the next part.
When I went to check the entire thread I saw you found that omission befit I did, and said as much

I have never made any statement about Acts prior to that and I certainly didn't correct it, which would be impossible given the fact that I never made it in the first place

But if you think differently, and you seem to do so, then point me to the comments I made please

You seem to have caught this and corrected it.

But in the interest of this thread not becoming more tedious, why don't you just go ahead explain what you're saying about prophets being 'the only thing"?

Yes, of course I corrected it. I thought I had pasted Acts to the second part and so I assumed that it was Acts what I was looking at. Yet after restoring that, I also needed to fix the comments I made to the second part. Cascading changes is what that is called

The only tedious part of this thread so far is your comments, aside from noting the omission: why do you need an explanation for my comment on prophets being the only thing in Romans ff. - do you see any of the other words in there?

I am sorry. I will undertake to make less effort to understand what you are talking about in the future.
