Capernaum and Tiberias: both a 'cemetery' and the home of a Jesus

Post by Giuseppe »

Tiberias was built by Herod on the site of a cemetery. Herod forced Galileans against their wills to live in the new city.

he [Herod] was aware that to make this place a habitation was to transgress the ancient laws of the Jews, because many sepulchres were to be taken away in order to make room for the city of Tiberias, whereas our law pronounces that such inhabitants are unclean for seven days".

(Antiquities 18:3)

Now, "Capernaum" means "Town of Mourning": an apt label for a cemetery, isn't it?

And Jesus b. Sapphat was an "archon" of Tiberias.

The incipit of Marcion has his Jesus descended on Capernaum, the first time.

Coincidence? :consternation:

Ignoring the troll Jax above (and his stupid allusions to a movie still censored here), another coincidence is that the demonic gerasene was also found in a cemetery, before the great exorcism by Gospel Jesus.

They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. 2 And when he had stepped out of the boat, immediately a man out of the tombs with an unclean spirit met him. 3 He lived among the tombs; and no one could restrain him any more, even with a chain;

(Mark 5:1-3)

Now, if Paul is behind the "demonic gerasene", then he saw Jesus the first time just there, in the "Town of Mourning", i.e. "Capernaum".

Hence, Marcion could well identify Capernaum as the first place where Paul — the Marcionite apostle par excellence — witnessed the descent of the Son of an Alien God on earth.

Note that under Pilate Tiberias didn't exist yet.

In his place what existed was a cemetery.

This is great evidence, I think: someway the evangelists had two contrasting informations about Jesus:
  • his home was in Tiberias
  • he was crucified under Pilate

To harmonize these two informations, they invented 'Capernaum' to allude to a Tiberias-before-that-became-Tiberias place.

Giuseppe --

Do you have an opinion about "Dalmanutha"?:

Mark 8: 10 (RSV):

[10] And he sent them away; and immediately he got into the boat with his disciples, and went to the district of Dalmanu'tha

Vic Alexander's Aramaic Translation has:

"[10] And at once he climbed aboard the vessel with his disciples and came to the land of oppression*.
[11] And the Pharisees came out and began making demands to him, and they asked him for signs from heaven, so as to test him...."

*8:10 Lit. Aramaic: "Dalmanutha."

Mark is either the worse Geographer ever or he is trying to tell us something and I tend towards the latter. "Land of Oppression" certainly fits where the Pharisees live (They are NOT allowed in the Realm of Heaven!). Do you see a Unifying Theme in these City Names?

it is paulinism in action.
Dalmanautha is Dalmatia (today Croazia). Paul went there.

Eventually the Gospel Jesus cursed Capernaum and its sister cities, Chorizin and Bethsaida because of their eventual rejection of him. (Despite his many miracles.)

It’s interesting that Rev. 16 says that “Babylon”(=Rome) has three major parts, which will fall as separate districts of that “city”. 19
“And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell…”

Hence, Capernaum == the hellenistic (hence eo ipso hated) Tiberias.
