Where was the Temple of Onias located?
Josephus writes that the Temple of Onias (Chonyo) in Egypt was built in Heliopoils, however the Talmud (Menahot 109b) seems to understand that the temple was built in Alexandria, not in Heliopolis?

“I take upon myself an olah” - he must offer it in the Temple. And if he offered it in the Temple of Onias (A temple made by Onias in the Egyptian city of Heliopolis, contemporary with the Second Temple in Jerusalem), he has not fulfilled his obligation.

Alexandria in the Babylonian Talmud sometimes seems to mean Egypt in general.

But it has always been difficult for me to reconcile Philo of Alexandria likely being of priestly background with his location in Alexandria. I think (but do not by any means know for certain) that something like a 'temple' might have existed in Alexandria. The idea that Clement's holy of holies was related to the Jewish structure is also interesting but by no means provable.

Onias is said to have based his temple on Is. 19:18, which refers to "the city of the sun" (or "destruction" as a play on "sun"), which points to Heliopolis.

Do you have any sources for this assertion?andrewcriddle wrote:Alexandria in the Babylonian Talmud sometimes seems to mean Egypt in general.

This doesn't prove anything because the text in parentheses was added by that website, the Mishnah simply reads Temple of Onias.iskander wrote:Mishnah Menachot 13.10
