Major differences between Septuagint and Masoretic?

Post by toejam »

I'm wondering if there's a good and accessible online resource that lists the most interesting differences between the Septuagint and the Masoretic texts?

Toe,

Joel Kalevsmachi (sp?) has a very good site. A lot of sites that promote one version of the Christian OT over another (Hebrew vs Greek) are very partisan. Some even suggest that the Hebrew books are translations of the corresponding Greek books!

I've noticed that. A straight google search seems to mostly reveal Christian apologetics sites trying to paint everything in rosy light - hoping to alleviate potential existential crisis. I'm looking for something that is more just a list of the most interesting differences without the spin.

I can't seem to find your guy :|

The Greek text is rated by Professor Schiffman in the link below.

^Thanks for the link. This is certainly helpful. Though my eyebrow was raised suspiciously when I read: "Septuagint Manuscripts: Translated from Original Hebrew texts: 285 B.C." We can't be sure that the Septuagint is translated from "original" Hebrew texts. Indeed, if there's any merit to the Documentary Hypothesis or similar theories, then it's clear the Septuagint is not a translation of "the original" text. The best the Septuagint might tell us is what the state of one branch of the transmission process may have looked like at around the turn of the era. I worry that your source has too much of a vested theological interest.

Original in this case means texts existing before the masoretic modification.
Theological interest in this case means that access to this work is free .
The link says that the old KJV translated from the MT is inferior to the even older Greek version that was translated from the " original " ( unmodified text ). The link is saying the opposite of the current selling mantra.
